  • Happy New Year!! I wish you all the best in the coming year, and I thank you all for your support of the site over these past few years!
  • Right now I am in Las Vegas – one of the few cities that can get away with charging $100 per person for the honor of standing out in the cold (40 degrees, which may not be cold to a lot of you) for 5 hours! What boggles my mind is that they got it! Instead of our normal trek to Downtown this year, we went to the Palace Station hotel and casino. It was very nice – since it is not on the strip or downtown, the visitors didn’t quite make it there, so there were plenty of open $5 tables, and they had a free party!
  • MESS was just updated to beta 13 – I will have it online when I get back.
  • A little warning for the group – if you are gonna buy online, don’t do it from DVD Wave.

I am now between jobs, literally. Just left my current job to move to Morgan Creek Productions on the Warner Bros. lot. Morgan Creek made Chill Factor and the animated King and I this year, but they are most famous for Ace Ventura, Major League, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and Last of the Mohecans.

  • August 1979 issue of CLOAD has been converted by Ian Mavric! Pick it up on the Disk Series Page.
  • Tim Mann has done it! Grab the DMK format Colossal Cave Adventure v1.0 – Microsoft here!

I deeply appreciate all the Teknosurf clicking which is going on – the site is almost self supporting, so please keep it up. I did get asked, however, to ask whoever out there is on CERFnet (with a fixed IP address) to please stop clicking hundreds of times. Only the first click per day for each IP address counts, and while people with dial-up accounts can click with each new login, they are getting upset that this individual is stacking the odds. I do appreciate every click, but they are getting mad. Please click every (or every new dialup login), but only once.

Will Collier emailed me with something interesting. In 1978 he paid $199 for a 16K upgrade to his Model I. Today, a 128MB SIMM is around $200. However, the same 128MB SIMM would have cost $1.6Million back in 1978!

  • David Keil has dumped the VERY popular SC-78503 Starfighter Disk. You can get it from the DMK Software page.
  • Alan Hensel has provided a copy of PAC-80 (Model III NewDos/80 Booting) for the Dave Keil Model III Emulator.

March 13, 2000

  • I have added a “how to take a zip from this site and run it in the emulator” section to the Transferring FAQ because MANY people have emailed trying to mount the /CMD file itself.
  • I have gotten a significant donation (30 disks) of new stuff which has to be sorted. It is in DMK format.

David Keil has been working on hardware emulation of RS hard disks. Version 5.50 will have some of the following features:

  • Shift F9 brings up the hard drive selection screen, it works just like the floppy disk selection screen.
  • F11 now brings up the virtual cassette screen.
  • F12 stops and single steps the CPU and Shift F12 restarts the CPU.
  • Pushing ‘ENTER’ in the disk selection screen brings up the point and shoot file selection just like before. Pushing ‘INSERT’ brings up a window to enter a virtual disk filename (NEW).
  • Shift Tab and the 0-3 keys work in the disk selection screen to ease disk selection.
  • Virtual hard disks entered on the NEW selection screen work with RS hard disk drivers. Hard disks entered in the configuration screen work with the EHARD/DCT driver. The same virtual hard disk is compatible with both types of drivers, even at the same time (drive :4 could use EHARD and drive :5 could use RSHARD6 with the same file, even at the same time, but don’t do that.). RSHARDx or TRSHDx require you to enter the number of heads and cylinders. To use an existing .HDV file you must enter the correct values. A 202/203 cyl 256 sector/cyl .HDV file would have 8 heads and 202/203 cylinders (15meg virtual disk). The number of sectors per cylinder divided by 32 is the number of heads. Hard drive partitioning up to 1024 cylinder 8 head drives are supported. You cannot partition the drive if you want compability with existing HDV files or other emulators. The new hard drive support is not needed to use existing .HDVs but is for DOSs other than LDOS/TRSDOS. When in 4P mode a properly patched LS-DOS can even boot from the virtual HD (using real 4P ROM image). You can create a virtual HD in the virtual HD selection screen. A disk created here can be used with EHARD or RSHARD? drivers (or other emulators). The emulator writes and uses a compatible .HDV header. Drives over 203 cylinders are not compatible with other emulators.
To format a disk using RSHARDx you must use RSFORMx (not format). Use the command:
    RSFORM6 (SYSTEM=YES,VERIFY=NO)
for example. This will write the directory and not format or verify the disk. If you don’t enter the SYSTEM=YES then the disk will be virtually formated (doesn’t do anything, but wastes time). If you don’t enter the VERIFY=NO then the system will write and read every virtual disk sector. This taks a LONG time and allocates the entire HD file (a 15meg .HDV file would be 15megs in size even with no files on it). Half the filesize will be allocated on the PC since HDFORM writes the directory midway on the HD. I have a patched RSFORMx that puts the directory on cylinder 1 to eliminate this waste of space on an empty HD.
  • The RS CP/M v3 will support four 153 cyl 4 head virtual hard disks (5meg). Just create and mount a 153 cyl 4 head virtual disk, boot RS CP/M, run CPMINIT, found on disk #5, copy files to the HD using PIP. Drive E,F,G & H are drives 0,1,2 & 3.

March 20, 2000

David Keil has also finished RS232 support for v5.5. Now the emulator can use a standard PC serial port. It can access another PC or a real TRS-80 via RS232 and xfer files (for those without 5.25″ drives).

April 2, 2000

Tim Mann has released xtrs version 4.0, a Radio Shack TRS-80 Model I/III/4/4P emulator for Unix and the X Window System, from his TRS-80 Web page or from the Emulator page

Version 4.0 adds emulation of the Orchesta-85 and Orchestra-90 sound synthesizers, emulation of the TimeDate80 and other battery-backed clocks, a -scale option to make the window larger, support for Level I cassette storage in .CAS files, and a pile of bug fixes.

For those of you living in a cave for the past few years, xtrs is a Radio Shack TRS-80 Model I/III/4/4P emulator for Unix and the X Window System. It includes lower case, the real time clock, the Model 4 hi-res graphics option, mouse support, sound and music support (requires OSS), cassette support, 5″ and 8″ floppy disk drives, and even hard disk drives. Unlike many Model I emulators, xtrs supports double sided, double density floppies, emulating both the Percom and Radio Shack Doubler. The emulated floppy and hard disk file formats are compatible with the popular MSDOS-based emulators by Jeff Vavasour, Matthew Reed, and David Keil, and (if you choose a capable enough file format), all features of the original TRS-80 floppy disk controller are emulated. Under Linux, physical floppy disk drives are also supported. Physical cassettes can even be read and written (when the phase of the moon is right).

For those of you who may have had some download trouble, I had mistakenly deleted what I thought was a useless directory, and the scripts linked off it. The directory is back, and Lord Praetor Satanus of Acheron (who found the problem to begin with, and who hosts one of the mirrors) has re-written my 4K scripts to 400 bytes and removed the dependency. Thanks Lord.

David Keil is still at it. His proposed v6.0 emulator will have

  • Hardware hard drive support (now other DOSs can use virtual hard disks)
  • Hardware emulation of the RS-232 interface using a PC COMM port.
  • Audio cassette recorder that can load real tapes directly using a SB compatible card and cassette player. That can load Wave files created with a Windows sound editor. That can record Wave files of the cassette audio output of the emulator. These recording can then be used in Windows or if the output was a CSAVE, it can be CLOADed (system tapes work too).
  • Ability to configure the Memory, FDC, EI and ROM / Model type.
  • Ability to load /CMD files directly from a PC directory.
  • Better PC to TRS-80 I/O features along with a better XFER/CMD utility.
  • New Multiplication & Division instructions added for Z80 programmers.
  • Improved SoundBlaster cassette/Orchestra-90 & VS-100 sound.
  • Plus many more enhancements & minor bug fixes.

David Keil is thinking about writing a LNW-80 emulator! He now has the ROM and DOCs needed, but wants to get v6.0 of the TRS-80 emulator out first.

April 30, 2000

  • I have added some other FAQ and Walkthroughs to the Adventure Page.
  • Since I don’t have a mac (but do use FUSION mac emulator), this one got by me … Yves Lempereur had updated his Model I emulator for the mac to v1.6 (non beta) in July of 1999. It is posted on the Emulator page
  • Charles E. Dills of San Luis Obispo, California has made an amazing donation … new harsare, books and manuals, and disks. Books/Manuals to be listed here soon.

May 1, 2000

  • The Charles Dills disks have been converted … 37 of the 43 without error. Since these are much easier than the German files (which I still have 30+ disks to go thru), I expect them to be online soon. They are not new, per say, although some are. What they are is .DSK images of Tandy ORIGINALS!!!!
  • The Adventure page has been reconditioned.
  • A new Library Page has been added. It is (going to be) a list of TRS-80 books, manuals and materials which I have in paper form.
  • When all the smoke cleared, 98 files/.DSK’s were created. I hope to post those tonight (the links tonite, the upload probably tomorrow). I will try to convert the 4 disks of Model 1 files on a Model 4 tonite. I do not know what to do with the 2 copy protected disks.

  • Still anxiously awaiting the large stash of 5.25″ disks …
  • Although this will not be a complete overhaul of the site, I have gone through the 13 Attack Force copies, put them in one archive, and included notes about the differences. None of the 13 copies had an identical CRC-32 value, so I kept them all.
  • I have gone through the 18 AI Lunar Lander copies, put them in two archives – 1980 and 1981. Bad dumps and dupes were deleted. The Model 4 version is still separate.
  • I have gone through the 16 Super Nova copies, put them in two archives – v1.1 and v1.2. Bad dumps, dupes and hacks were deleted.

  • Still anxiously awaiting the large stash of 5.25″ disks …
  • I have cleaned up 25 files into five archives: Martian Patrol, Air Raid, Armored Patrol (v1 and v2) and Cosmic Fighter. As ‘usual’, dupes (CRC-32 only) and hacks were removed.
  • Cleaned up the Dancing Demon’s into 1979 and 1986. Each has the pre-set dance routines. 1979 was Radio Shack and is Tape, 1986 was Powersoft and is Disk.

Lord Praetor Satanus of Acheron a/k/a Lord Spambraticus of Borg a/k/a Lord Satanus Emperor of Acheron has done it again. Lord has created a CGI script which randomly selects a mirror. This means there is no need for the [1/2/3] links following each file. This also means that the size of the download pages are DRAMATICALLY (50%) reduced. Only the Model I pages have been updated, though.

  • All 3 mirrors should be back online, and the ender.com mirror will no longer mangle the files. If you get an error today, it just means I have not yet fixed the CGI.
  • The new documents are online … and are probably scattered thru the models and docs pages. Thanks to Wade for his scans.
  • Tim Mann has updated his XTRS emulator.
Version 4.1 adds emulation of the Radio Shack hard disk controller hardware.
With this emulation, all drivers for the original hardware should work,
including the TRSDOS6/LS-DOS/LDOS drivers RSHARD (tested) and TRSHD (tested),
the Montezuma CP/M drivers (tested), drivers for other operating systems
(untested), and the Model 4P boot ROM (tested).

Hard disk images using the new emulation are interchangeable with other
emulators and with xtrs's old hard drive emulation. The old emulation
(an xtrs-specific driver just for TRSDOS6/LS-DOS/LDOS) still works, too.

Version 4.1 of xtrs also includes several bug fixes and minor improvements
in other areas; see the included ChangeLog log for details.

xtrs is a Radio Shack TRS-80 Model I/III/4/4P emulator for Unix and the
X Window System. It includes lower case, the real time clock, the Model
4 hi-res graphics option, mouse support, sound and music support (requires
OSS), cassette support, 5" and 8" floppy disk drives, and even hard disk
drives. Unlike many Model I emulators, xtrs supports double sided, double
density floppies, emulating both the Percom and Radio Shack Doubler. The
emulated floppy and hard disk file formats are compatible with the popular
MSDOS-based emulators by Jeff Vavasour, Matthew Reed, and David Keil,
and (if you choose a capable enough file format), all features of the
original TRS-80 floppy disk controller are emulated. Under Linux, physical
floppy disk drives are also supported. Physical cassettes can even be
read and written, with luck. The user interface is a bit spartan, but
    it gets the job done.

New DMK Software In — Super Utility for Model 4 (.DMK) – Kim Watt

The cleaning continues, but is too hard to describe. Most of this was filename cleanup. Anything beginning with an M is probably a new file – that’s where I was concentrating when I found the kluge of file descriptions sorted by “Mod 1: xxxxxx” which needed to be fixed.
In actuality, we lost 10 Model 3 Files and 30 Model 1 Files

  • XTRS v4.2 released … includes emulation of the HRG1B graphics card for the Model I and an improvement to the -scale option, both contributed by Ulrich Mueller. It also includes fixes to a few obscure bugs. See the included ChangeLog for details.
  • Request: xtrs now emulates graphics cards for the Model I and Model 4/4P, but not for the Model III. I believe there were Model III versions of the both the Micro Labs Grafyx Solution and the Radio Shack graphics card that worked in a Model III, but Tim don’t have any specs for them. If you do, please email Tim Mann.

As many of you have noticed, we are in a transition period. Actually, we were – but I am announcing it now that the transition is over. The archive has been virtually entirely moved over to the ender.com server of Lord Apollyon. I would like to thank Steve McCoy for his 4+ years of providing server space for the TRS-80 archive on the simology.com site, for putting up with the issues which had arisen due to excessive downloading, and all the rest. Steve has a heart of gold and I am indebted to him for his having provided server space for all these years.
Please report all broken links to me, as those are probably things that didn’t get transitioned properly.

  • I intend to make a major push today on the cleaning. I noticed that I still have a bunch of unsorted stuff to post, but I am kinda on a roll. I intend to get to that stuff in short order as well.
  • Matt Fleeger is no longer with valkyrie, and while they are maintaining the “mirror”, I do not know how long that will last. I will probably kill the documentation section if that mirror goes down as I do not want to overload ender.com. If that happens, you can get the DOCs from Wade’s site and from Keil’s site, so no need to fret.
  • If you have ftp-able server space you want to donate, please let me know.

September 19, 2000

  • I am working on a TOSEC rename for the ORCH files … I have renamed over 500 so far out of the 23xx
  • I have been moving files, but not really keeping track … sorry 🙁

September 20, 2000

Dave Keil released v6.0 of his Model I and Model III/4 emulators.

September 23, 2000

You may think nothing is going up … I am working like a dog… I am getting the Model 4 files ready for uniformity (a full library CRC-32 run for dupes), Making a ROMDOCTOR file for ORCH-90 files, and continuing to mash thru the Model 1/3 groups. The updates were the problem, so I stopped. There is PLENTY going on …

September 29, 2000

  • There has been a break in the activity … and all files have been reuploaded. I will let you all know when the cleaning is done, and I will put up maybe an A.zip, B.zip, etc. for easier batch downloading!
  • Great news for me … my fiancee and I just bought a house!!!! Now let’s hope it passes inspection 🙂

October 3, 2000

I have added some new DMK format software from Dave Keil’s Site:

  • AllWrite! v1.12 for Model I (.DMK) – Prosoft
  • Caterpillar for Model I (.DMK) – Soft Sector
  • Scarfman for Model I (.DMK) – Philip Oliver
  • HyperZap v3.2c for Model I
  • RapidOS for Model 4

October 13, 2000

The shrinking project is coming to a close …

Added the following thanks to Thomas Ally:

  • Word Check for Model I (/BAS) – J.C. Sprott

Added the following thanks to Knut Roll-Lund:

  • DosPLUS v3.5 (Master) for Model I (.DMK) – Micro-Systems
  • EDAS v4.3a for Model I (.DMK) – Misosys (1984)
  • Smal-LDOS for Model I (.DMK) – Logical Systems (1982)
  • Supreme Ruler Plus v2.2 for Model I (.DMK) – George Greczy (1984)

October 18, 2000

As you may recall, I have been trying to do 4 projects simulatenously (Remove the dupes from the Model 1 and 3 libraries, TOSEC the ORCH’s, TOSEC the Model 4 files, Go through the unsorted files). Rather than continue all 4, I focused on #1, which I am pleased to say is almost done. I am on my third pass (each pass has renaming of files, which shifts them around, which then shows them to possibly be duplicates) and almost done with it. My next project will probably be to finish the ORCH TOSEC, as I am about 700 files into the 3,500.

October 19, 2000

I am almost done with my third pass …

October 21, 2000

As part of the overhaul (which is almost done, I promise), I have moved the DMK software into their appropriate model directories. It made no sense to me to have them separated out. I probably only have one more pass to do.

October 24, 2000

For people looking for parts or TRS-80’s for the cost of shipping … head on over to the Sale/Trade page.

October 25, 2000

Here’s the drill. I finally finished the duplicate removal (or as much as I will probably do). Rather than be hasty, though, I think I ensure uniformity on the filecomments if I take another day or two. I started last night using little quickbasic programs to parse to tell me if I am missing the model number, or the file type, etc. but I did not finish. I can also try to push through the unsorted. Let’s say that I intend to rerelease the library on Monday, and I will make large zips (at least for a few weeks).

October 26, 2000

I am done! I have gone as far as I am gonna go with the cleaning of the archive. It is time to get back to the addition of new files.

By the time this is posted, all files should be online and the download pages updated. I intend to resume separately announcing new files as of this point.

Below you will find the long-awaited “archive in large zips”, approximately 10MB each (I would recommend using Getright to download them.

The files will not be updated … they represent the archive only as of today (but there will be updates in the news)

Most importantly, I would URGE downloaders to not merely apply the contents of these files over their current collection. If you do so, I can guarantee that you will have somewhere between 2 and 4 duplicates of EACH file, and a simple CRC test (or file size test) will NOT show that.

Finally – please order through the site for amazon, buy.com, etc. …

Without further ado: [DELETED – See 10/27/00 News]

October 27, 2000

Well that mirror lasted a whole day! The Tapscott mirror is no more – not so much due to the archives, but bandwidth problems from his ISP. His current lower-than-expected bandwidth is being reduced more by the archive and he has asked that we shut it down until he changes ISP’s. I am looking for alternate arrangements.

OK, here are the new links … [SEE OCTOBER 31, 2000]

October 28, 2000

Howard Lee (who has made some major contributions to the site) has pointed out to me that the archives below do not contain “S” files. I will take care of that on monday. Sorry for the inconvenience.

October 30, 2000

The “S” files are now up … see October 27 for the links. … Are you clicking the banner?

Nele Abels-Ludwig of Germany had done the above conversions … here’s what he had to say:

Brian Howarth’s Mysterious Adventures:

————————————–

Since the Howarth data files are very closely related to the Scott Adams data files, it took me very few modifications to get them running with the standard adventure interpreter ADVENTUR/CMD, which can be found on many .DSK files containing Scott Adams Adventures.

I had to do three modifications:

  1. I needed to reformat the datafiles found in the IF-Archives. (ftp://ftp.gmd.de/if-archive) Those are intended for the use with the Scottfree interpreter and have CHR 10 as a end-of-line marker. The TRS-80 needs CHR 13 as EOL, the Scott Adams database sometimes uses CHR 10 inside strings as a LF. A small Pascal program did the trick for me.
  2. After copying the files to a virtual disk, ADVENTUR/CMD gave me first a “bad security” error message and returned to the Newdos prompt. This problem was a bit more complicated, but solvable thanks to the very detailed description of the Scott Adams format which comes with the “Adventure Editor” by Bruce Hansen and Allan Moluf. The program can be found on Ira’s site. Apparantly the driver for the Howarth database does not use the security checksum which is necessary for the Adams driver. The three last lines in a database, which follow the remarks for the action table, give the version, the adventure number and the security checksum. The interpreter calculates an own checksum by adding the number of objects (line 2, counting from 1) and 2*number of actions (line 3) plus the version. If the number doesn’t match with the number found in the database, the program simply stops. I was able to correct the checksums by hand, using a pocket calculator and an ascii-editor. (I really couldn’t be bothered with writing a program for this little task 🙂 )
  3. Another apparant difference between the Adams and the Howarth drivers is that the Adams driver needs information to allocate string space. Line 1 (counting from 1) in a database gives in KB the combined space needed for the text of verbs, nouns, messages, room descriptions and object descriptions. The Howarth databases contain a 0 at this position, therefore the Adams driver finds that it has allocated too little memory and drops out with an error message. Again, I was able to change the databases by hand, allocating about 6KB for each adventure which seems enough for the interpreter.

I have quickly tried out every adventure and they seem to run perfectly well. I haven’t played them through yet, so if anybody should have problems, I would be grateful if they contacted me at my momentary email-address (abels@stud-mailer.uni-marburg.de)

Cheers and happy adventuring,

Nele

Jeff Zugale pointed out that a file which was in the archive in 1998 was no longer in the archive by July 99. Through some research I have recovered two copies of Star Clash by Hayden Books.

November 23, 2000

I have redone some of the patches, augmenting them from my unsorted directory. I have added a how to make Super Utility+ into a /CMD file, and updated the BRUN, SCRIPSIT 1, TRSDOS v1.2, TRSDOS v1.3, DOSPLUS v3.4, SuperScripsit for III …

December 10, 2000

I have removed the link to TRS-80 AGAIN on the main page. Pete Bumgardner has shut down the site. I would like to thank Pete for all his hard work in keeping the TRS-80 alive and wish him the best.

December 12, 2000

Scott Adams has updated his copyright information.

He also has just written a new adventure! You can order it from his web site.

Did you know there is also a Palm Pilot executor for his adventures?

Added LNW-80 and SYSTEM 80 ROMS to the Emulator page. Neither works with any of the emulators.

December 13, 2000

Dave Keil has updated his Model 1 and Model 3/4 emulators to v6.01. Get them from the Emulator page.

December 14, 2000

  • I have added the long-missing Savage Island II walk-though to the Adventures page.
  • I have added the long-missing Sorcerer of Claymore Castle walk-though to the Adventures page.
  • I have added the long-missing Questprobe II: Spiderman walk-though to the Adventures page.
  • I have added a ‘play them online’ link to the same page.

December 16, 2000

Tim Mann had pointed out that my LNW-80 and SYSTEM 80 ROMS were bad. I have reposted them and they both work in, at least, Matt Reed’s and Tim Mann’s emulators. Go to the Emulator page.

December 18, 2000

Added the walk-though to QuestProbe I: The Hulk to the Adventures page.

December 25, 2000

Added Jeff Vavasour’s Web Site (yes, he finally has one!) to the emulator page …

December 28, 2000

  • Fixed the links to Jeff Vavasour’s Web Site
  • I have been informed by advertising.com that I do not generate sufficient traffic to continue being a member. Oh well – although not a lot of people were clicking, it did cover the site expense while it lasted. Keep clicking thru January 15th, which is my last day of availability!

I am trying to get the ORCH files into TOSEC format, and have created a spreadsheet. If any of you out there are willing to help, please let me know. It entails using any text viewer (I use LIST in DOS) to see the name of the song, the author, the transcriber, the year, and the specific orch model used (based on the first few lines of ASCII text) and typing those into a spreadsheet. I have done almost 900 by now, but there are 3000!

Dave Keil has released v6.02 of his Model I and Model III emulators. They are available on the emulator page. Among the fixes are:

  • Fixed major error created in v6.00 with JV3 vdisks.
  • Fixed error that caused vdisks to be improperly created in Model 1 emulator.
  • Fixed FDC timing problems that cause some FDC commands to finish to quickly causing retries and errors in TRSDOS. (In Model 1 emulator it prevented TRSDOS 2.7DD from formatting disks)
  • Fixed error that caused snapshots to be saved with a default extention of .WAV (Model 1 emulator)
  • Fixed minor error in REAL disk routines that cause problems formatting disks using the variable sector length disk specification files. (Prevented the formatting of RS CP/M disks with 512 byte sectors)
  • Fixed error in the virtual disk selection screen that caused display problems when PGDN was used to display second page of filenames.
