January 1, 2019 – Model 3 or 4 USB Keyboard

Kyle Wadsten has released his interface boards for the Model 3 and 4 that allow plugging in modern keyboards into the classic TRS-80 Model 3 & 4 machines.

There are two different board designs, one for USB keyboards and another for PS/2 input. 

What I find very intriguing and helpful is the ability to use the existing keyboard along with a modern keyboard at the same time.

January 24, 2019 i TRS-80 Add-Ons

Joe Rouceville has been designing and building peripherals for the Model I which he wants to share with everyone.

First is TRS80HDD. It is a way to run TRS-80 Model I disks from a SD card. Similar to a MISE but far less sophisticated. Schematics, instructions, and background can be found on his GitHub repository [https://github.com/calphool/TRS80HDD – Hotlink Deleted]. He hadvises that all parts are currently attainable at mouse, the edge adapter from DigiKey, and the schematics can be sent to allpbc for creation of a PCB.

Second is TRS80GS. It is an expander for a TRS-80 Model that includes Texas Instruments video and audio chips to permit the Model I to do color graphics and have 6 tonal voices and 2 drum voices. January 29, 2019 – Screenshots Added

After almost 5 (!) months, I have completed preparing a relevant (or as relevant as it can be) screenshot for every single entry in the Model 1/3/4 archive. That is over 17,000 screenshots. This entailed running every single program to make sure it worked; a task made difficult by the fact that different programs run on different models, and different DOS’s, and may even be a different version of BASIC (ZBASIC, NewBASIC, GBASIC, BASICG, SuperBasic, etc). It was a project long in the coming.

I would like to give a special shout-out to George Philips for tweaking his TRS80GP emulator to assist in this effort.

Along the way I have found out things like:

• Some Model I DOS’s toss the last line when reading a file saved in ASCII
• TRSDOS and LDOS for the Model 4 are not simply the same OS
• Model I TRSDOS does not support batch files
• Model I LDOS requires a trailing slash when there’s no extension, making it largely incompatible with all multi-part programs
• MultiDOS for the Model 4 has a special BASIC which can properly de-tokenize Model I/III BASIC
• LDOS for the Model 4 has a special USR(11) function
• There’s a whole class of software written for the Model III that can only run on a Model 4
• Statements like INPUT@ and CMD”O” means its probably DOSPlus
• Statements like NAME(AQ$,NQ%amp;,VARPTR(RF%)) means its DOSPlus
• Statements like #GSUB or LINE a,b,c,d,SET or SOUND 4 or PGET or GPOINT x,y or INV a,b,c,d means its probably NEWBASIC
• Statements like BREAK or x=SYS(12) means its probably BEYOND BASIC
• Statements like EDIT(10,20,30) means its probably ZBASIC
• Statements like @CLS means its MODEL 4 Micro Labs GBASIC

• Someone a lot smarter than I needs to figure out how the programs which POKE USR routines can possibly work in DOS
• Model 4 Communication Programs usually need SET *CL COM/DVR run from the TRSDOS command line first
• The LDOS command to set up a ramdrive in DCT format is SET (DRIVE=4,DRIVER=”MEMDISK/DCT”).
• /APP files are for PRO-WAM
• Misosys catalog program names are not the same names used in the program (i.e, “Pro-Duce” is really “Misosys Disassembler”)
• People LOVED to put their names on other people’s software (or remove the attribution lines)
• TRS80GP can do everything that Dave Keil’s DOS emulator’s could, but without needing to run DOSBOX!

February 14, 2019 – TRS-80 Network Interface Card

Peter Cetinski has been working on a project that provides a simple, cheap, WiFi based, encrypted Internet communications via the TRS-80 by connecting to the Model III and Model 4 expansion port.

TRSNIC provides the foundational protocols required to implement modern network interactions on the TRS-80 microcomputer. The first such protocol provided is TCP/IP via an implementation of the Berekely Sockets API. TCP/IP is the dominant low level network protocol in use today. Many of today’s higher level network protocols like HTTP and FTP are implemented on top of TCP/IP. This means many modern networking applications and systems can be built upon the base TCP/IP support provided by trsnic.

March 5, 2019 – New TRS-80 Trash Talk Podcast

The podcast TRS-80 Trash Talk # 29 is out now.

In this episode, In this episode, Peter Cetinski talks with Steve Leininger. Steve was the designer of the first TRS-80 microcomputer which became known as the Model I. In the interview, Steve talks about his early life and how he came to be hired by Tandy Radio Shack to design their first computer in 1976. He tells us what it was like to work at the fabled company with a number of interesting stories, many of which you you probably haven’t heard before. Then, he finishes up by discussing what he’s been working on since leaving the company up until the present day.

March 6, 2019 – Updated TRS-80 Emulator

George and Peter Phillips have updated TRS80GP to v2.1.0

Changes include:

• Better handling of floppy (formatting is the biggest)
• .cmd files now loaded under TRSDOS/LSDOS rather than ROM BASIC.
• Sound mute menu entry and auto-muting paused or using menus.
• Full screen and new sharp rendering mode. (perfectly square pixels with scaling)
• Reassigned and new hot keys
• Disk files recognized by .dmk, .imd, .dsk suffix so can be listed without -dN on command line. Or with just -d if suffix unknown.
• Can insert unformatted blank disks with “-d dmk” and “-d imd”.
• Printer menu to turn off pop-up and turn off printer (also -poff).
• Reset button and RAM badge added to soft keyboard.
• Added IM mode, WZ register, EX latches and Z-80 instruction state to debugger.
• BASICG and hires graphics utilities now on built-in Model II TRSDOS boot disk.
• Handling of reset button and HALT instruction fixed on Model I.
• Clock automatically set for Model 1, 3, 4 built-in TRS-DOS, LDOS and LSDOS.
• Added -is, -ics, -id, -itime, -im trackdump and -showframe for automatic input “scripting”.
• Add “Replace” to diskette menu for quicker eject + insert workflow.
• Now have -m3n for Norcom emulation (99% just a different character ROM).
• Bug fixes in screenshot when paused.
• Beam debug now defaults to blue for conflict colour and shows the data that would have been displayed if the conflict did not occur.
• Built-in Model 4 LDOS now configured for 4 floppy drives (it had only 2).

• The Archive Search page now allows for ‘noau’ in the Author field to filter out programs where the author is unknown.

April 17, 2019 – New TRS-80 Trash Talk Podcast

Finally, we interview TRS-80 programmer Rick Papo. Rick was the author of several important reference books for the TRS-80 which included reverse engineered and highly documented system source code. July 30, 2017 – Unknown Commands

In my travels of reading disks and making sure the software runs, I have come across a few programs which use commands I cannot identify. I have check Snapp Extended BASIC, GBASIC, BASICG, LNWBASIC, LBasic, ZBASIC, NEWBASIC, etc. and I just can’t figure them out.

If anyone out there knows which Model 1/3/4 environment or software package may use the command LINPUT, please let me know. This command is part of Kim Watt’s Super Utility Help BBS, I think.

UPDATE: The creator of the CHROMATRS has been working with Pascal.

Pascal Holdry is still working closely with the creator of the ChromaTRS reverse engineer the ChromaTRS, but there are still some questions about the circuit board that remain unanswered.

If anyone has a ChromaTRS would you please reach out. I think even just a high res photo of both sides of the board might do the trick in identifying some missing components.

August 14, 2019 – New TRS-80 Trash Talk Podcast

The podcast TRS-80 Trash Talk # 32 is out now.

In this episode they start by previewing the upcoming Tandy Assembly 2019. They have a lot of big news to relate regarding the 3rd annual gathering of Tandy Radio Shack computing enthusiasts in Springfield, Ohio. They also discuss a new document archiving project of original Radio Shack Customer Service Bulletins. There’s the usual segments on new projects, new acquisitions, listener feedback and the book review. They then try to decide what do you do with a wall of Model I Video Displays. Finally, in their interview segment, Pete Cetinski talks to Tandy Radio Shack marketing executive Buzz Murphy. Buzz relates his experience at the company while riding the incredible wave that was created by the original TRS-80 microcomputer release in 1977.

August 15, 2019 – Site Updates

I don’t usually post site updates, I just make them. I know I should be keeping better tabs on it 🙁

Anyway, here are a bunch of site updates that have occurred over the past however long:

• The ROMS page has a breakdown of what changed from v1.2 to v1.3 of the Model I ROM.
• I continue to scour old magazines for ads for software which was advertised, and adding them as “MISSING” to the archive.
• Every result from the search page should have a screenshot (or a note that none was available, no printer output, etc)
• Since people, apparently, LOVED to remove author credits from these programs (or putting their own names on them), I am using those screenshots to determine whether “Author Unknown” programs are actually known.
• Every time someone emails me a hardware question (which I send to Ian Mavric, thanks Ian), I update the repairs page with their question and his answer.
• I keep adding boxes to help fine tune archive searches. This is mainly because the search page is how I find things too, so if I am trying to find all software without a screenshot, for example, I can do that.
• As people point out pages which do not render correctly (because they are pre-HTML5), I fix them.
• Added a /SYS guide for TRSDOS v1.3 on the DOS Tips and Tricks page.
• Caught up on all the unsorted images and put solid effort into figuring out if they were good files or bad files, or needed 3rd party software.
• Fixed the bug that was keeping the ads from coming up on the archive searches, at least for me. It seemed anything being served from a directory called /ads/, or had a filename called ad-xxxxx, got blocked!

A site visitor is giving away his original Radio Shack Color Computer with a few accessories, free for local pickup in Frederick Maryland. He says:

The Color Computer boxes are in ratty condition – that is they look to have gotten wet either before, or after, the rats and squirrels started chewing. The good news is I must have been very thoughtful when I put every thing back in the original packaging since the equipment all looks good to me (see pictures).

It has been a while since I posted what I have been working on …

• Converted the entire site (other than search results pages) into HTML5, including verifying all links.
• Restructured the overly cramped “Zaps/Mods/Pokes/Tricks” Pages.
• Broke out all ROM/CPU related pages.
• Added pages explaining the disassembled Model I ROM.
• Added a Radio Shack Lore page, which is excerpts from discussions on comp.sys.tandy.
• Updated the magazine search database with new magazine.
• Added new magazines to their respective pages
• Removed all pop-up pages (except search results pages); everything is now included in the WordPress site

Site Updates since the last …

• Cleaned up inconsistent CSS from all over the place, hoping for a more uniform look.
• Removed the ‘who posted’ and in ‘what category’ from news items, and consolidated the look of the news items. Old news will continue to be messed up though.
• Shrunk the right “navbar” to give the site more width.
• Fixed the WELCOME page links and updated it to include 3 suggested page groups.
• Broke out more of the INTERNAL into separate menu items under the ADVANCED heading.
• Consolidated 4 different sets of RAM ADDRESSES into one page. I merged them all, and it will take time to consolidate the different entries; so for the time being there may be 1-4 different entries per RAM address. Of course, I had to get them all into the same format which involved a LOT of decimal to hex and hex to decimal conversions.
• Consolidated 3 different keymaps into one page.
• Continued cleanup work on the ROM EXPLAINED pages. These pages will likely keep getting cleaned up.
• Created an Interviews page and moved individual interviews off the menu. Rounded up links I from other sites as well.
• Scrubbed for more bad links.
• Posted somewhere in the area of 320 ZIP’s contaning patches to various pieces of software, for the new Patches page.

If anyone wants to error check and/or otherwise help clean up the RAM ADDRESS page or try to help organize the uploaded Patches, such help would be welcome.

Site Updates since the last …

• All pages have been converted to HTML5, other than the non-Wordpress catalog search result pages and the non-Wordpress magazine search results page. The site should scale to monitor size well now.
• The software search results page, which is a combination of php, html, css, jquery, and mysql, has been converted as well. I have also put in a near approximation of the WordPress navbar to make navigating from the page easier.
• The software search results page now also displays whether there were Radio Shack Bulletins in regard to any piece of software.
• Customer service bulletins, whether on the software search results page or the Radio Shack Bulletins page, are all downloadable.
• The way WordPress handles news is not conducive to widescale fixes, so most links from a decade ago, whether to sites, files, or pictures, are bad. I am converting super-old news to web pages, fixing them along the way, and removing them from the way WordPress generally handles news. This way they are still searchable, but also consistent.
• Having lunch with Don French this weekend; looking forward to it!

December 9, 2019 – TRLD

I am way late to the game on this one. George Philips has written and released a Windows executable file call TRLD which will convert between cas, hex, bas, and cmd.

According to his [http://48k.ca/trld.html – Hotlink Deleted] website:

trld reads one or more TRS-80 programs in .cmd, .cas, .hex or .bas format and saves them as a single .rom, .cmd, .cas or .hex file. As input it supports 250, 500 and 1500 baud .cas cassette image files as well as tokenized and ASCII .bas BASIC program files. Output can be in .cmd, .cas, .hex or .wav (audio file) format.

A precompiled binary for Windows is included along with the source code which can easily be compiled on Mac and Linux systems. These program loading routines are the same ones used in my TRS-80 Model I/III/4 emulator.

trld is a command-line tool. It takes a list of files. The last one is the output file, the rest are loaded in sequence and combined together to form the output. The format of the input files is determined automatically. The output format is chosen depending on the file suffix. For example, to convert a cassette file to a .cmd (disk executable format) you would type:

trld original.cas original.cmd

With multiple input files the program start address is taken from the last file. For “.cas” output the name of the SYSTEM file is based on the first 6 letters of the output file name. With

trld file.cmd ..\converted\out.cas

The “..\converted\out.cas” file will be called “OUT” and that’s the name you must pass to the SYSTEM command. If you’re using Play CAS, it tells you the tape file’s name.

• Added a Fun Stuff web page, with cute things that are probably only found on the news page when they first came out.
• Changed the Software Archive Search to remove language and catalog columns if they are all English or blank, respectively – reallocating the space to other columns.
• Converted the Catalog Search page to CSS3.
• Converted the Magazine Search page to CSS3. That’s it. Everything has been converted.
• Fixed so … many … bugs in the Magazine Search page. YIKES.
• Added CODEWORKS Magazine to the Magazine Search Page database.
• Fixed all broken links that [https://www.brokenlinkcheck.com/ – Hotlink Deleted] BrokenLinkCheck.com reported. It doesn’t check files or images, so there may be some magazine covers which are broken.
• [https://www.deadlinkchecker.com/ – Hotlink Deleted] DeadLinkChecker.com has let me know that images that come up as a result of clicking on a catalog number need to be updated. That will take me some time.
• Although 2017 is not old, the way WordPress stores news items leads to excessive page counts, and those page counts make generating a sitemap impossible. So I have moved the 2017 news to an archived page. It wasn’t enough to get the site fully covered, but at least it pulled 41 pages off.

• Figured out how to make the product entries far less ugly under the various Model pages, so will be updating those as time allows.
• Added Mark Blair’s Model 4 ROM EPROM Adapter Board to the Hardware Modifications and Fixes page.
• At the request of [https://prof-80.fr/ – Hotlink Deleted] Pascal Holdry, added the ability to translate pages to other languages (top of the right navbar). Pascal’s thought is that it is about 80% accurate, but the other 20% is easy enough to figure out.
• Updated the Catalog Search Page to support Catalog ID (such as “RSC-03”) and Price (in that catalog; so it will change catalog to catalog). Now I need to go through the process of reviewing each catalog to enter that info. Right now only RSC-03 and RSC-04 have been entered. Possible uses include seeing when a product was first listed, when it was no longer listed, and what the prices were at each iteration.
  
  Anyone who wants to help enter the data from catalogs, please let me know.

Pascal Holdry has reverse engineered the Model I Joystick Adapter which can be plugged directly into the output bus of the TRS-80 Model I via a 40 pin cable.

He advises it works with all games, via jumper select (Big 5 games need to be jumpered differently)

1. Created a page with the official Model III/4 ROM Checksums
2. Added the Network 4 Ports to the Ports and I/o Device page
3. Added DASM Z-80 Disassembler v1.02 to the Misc Utilities page. DASM is a 2015 Windows program to disassemble Z-80 CMD and HEX files. It supports MAP, EQU, and Screen files to make the disassembly clearer.
4. Information about the missing v1.1 Model I ROM has been added to the Model I ROM Version Comparison Page.
5. The Network 4 Transporter ROM has been disassembled and commented.

June 21, 2020 – Site Updates Since the Last

1. Some of the early CLOAD magazines were not downloadable and others had bad links. That has all been fixed. (Thank you Murray W.)
2. After looking into the bad links, I decided to break down and subscribe to Dr. Link’s 10,000 link package to scan more than just 1,500 (free) dead links. I learned 2 things: that I have more than 10,000 links and out of the first 10,000 (which is where my subscription capped out) I had 245 bad links, which I have fixed. I can try to squeeze a little bit more out by ‘deleting’ pages and re-scanning, but I don’t think I’m going to get the full site checked.

July 25, 2020 – Site Updates Since the Last

1. I got 2 shipments of CLOAD tapes, one of which was completely and totally blank. 20 tapes, all blank. I converted the other set, and scanned the media for both. These are all online and available for download.
2. In doing this I realized that the tutorial I have for reading tapes used Goldwave, which still exists, but costs. I updated the page to contain step by step instructions using the free program Audacity.
3. I also realized that some permitted files were not present and some screen shots, media scans, etc. were missing, so I modified the ever increasingly hard to maintain program I use which generates the SQL based on various file comments other input files to audit for missing things. Hopefully this will keep the missing files and graphics low.

Despite glacial postal service between the US and Australia and chip shortages, a few of the new CHROMAtrs boards from Ian Mavric are working (based on work by Pascal Holdry). You may not know that Robert S French released much of the software (Ira’s site) and it is possible to obtain the code and work on it. That’s what Tim Halloran has been up to (with help from George Phillips) — in particular making it easier for cassette-based systems to use the board.

September 30, 2020 – Issues in TRSTools and TRSREAD

A site visitor who received a bunch of tapes and disks from Charles Guy (owner of Cornsoft) before Charles passed away in 2004 has identified that DOSPLUS 3.4A for the Model III is not properly handled by TRSTools/TRSRead.

Two other DOS’s which do not read properly are TRSDOS v2.3B and TRSDOS 2.7SD.

So if you are dealing with those DOS’s, try VDISK instead, and don’t make the mistake I did of believing the images are damaged (mea culpa).

Michael Wessel has developed the Talker/80, a new Voice Syhtesizer for the Model I, III, and 4. It has natural sounding speak (like Alexa), requires no machine language driver, and has an E/I passthrough so it will work with a E/I, FreHD, and Quinterface.

The Talker/80 emulates the TRS-80 Voice Synthesizer and the VS-100.

The Talker/80 is open source under the GPL3 License and is maker-friendly (no surface mount soldering and easy to acquire parts). See:

Dean Bear has been kind enough to update his ROM-ID Utility for the Model I, III, and 4 (Model 4 in Model III Mode) based on the checksums determined from the research. You can download that file from the TRS-80 Software Search Page by searching for Dean Bear in the Author box. The Model I/III and Model 4 copies are identical, and the 2013 file is the deprecated one. Thank you Dean!

For those up to checking their ROMs but who cannot get ROMID onto their system, you can find your ROM checksums using plain old TRSDOS 1.3’s MEMTEST on your Model III or 4.

TRS80GP has been updated to v2.4. Changelog:

• Videotex terminal emulation (use -mv)
• Electric Crayon emulator; -p :ec or choose Electric Crayon in Printer -> Connection
• TCP/IP printer support with -p host:port (like -r option is for serial ports)

December 6, 2020 – ROMID Has Been Updated Again

Dean Bear has been kind enough to do one more update his ROM-ID Utility for the Model I, III, and 4 (Model 4 in Model III Mode)

This update does 2 things: [1] Includes compatibility with TRSDOS for the Model III (wrapped the M3 routine to work with both M1 and M3) and [2] Added the current iterations of the FreHD ROMs to the identifiable list of ROMs.

December 9, 2020 – Extremely Large Collection of Service Manuals in Lakeland Florida

A gentleman in Florida has an extremely large collection of Tandy / Radio Shack service manuals and disks free for local pickup only … so, if you live near Lakeland FL (between Tampa and Orlando) and can rescue them …! He does not want to give them to someone who will sell them, and is looking for someone who might be willing to preserve them digitally (i.e., scan them).

Even if you do not want the items, but live in the area and can store them for a few weeks, we would love your help. We can likely get down there and/or have a task rabbit pack and ship to us, but not within the one week we have, so if you can pick up and store, that would be a great help to the TRS-80 community too.

The items available / needing pickup are:

• 4 large Rubbermaid totes (probably 75 lbs. each)
• A number of file boxes
• 2 ancient Rubbermaid footlockers
• A lot of loose binders, diskette boxes, etc.
• A few hardware items

Quentin Barnes has releases v4.6 of the Catweasel Tools originally written by Tim Mann.

• Git repo “cw2dmk” of Tim Mann’s work was created by ezrec (Jason S. McMullan). Transferred to qbarnes.
• Switched Linux release binaries to be for 64-bit OSes.
• Added change from George Phillips for his “join” (-j) feature that will join different rereads of the same track and merge good sectors.
• Fixed problem of missing data between index hole detect and read started. This should noticably reduce disk read errors and even occasionally dropping of entire sectors.
• Added change to allow cw2dmk tools to function on newer Linux releases by enabling PCI I/O space access if disabled.
• Added change to recognize and skip factory-formatted sides of a disk. Controlled with -b option.
• The subdirectory “cwsdpmi” is now a git sub-module for picking up the “cwsdpmi.exe” binary for MS-DOS.
• Cleaned up and merged multiple makefiles for different environments into one. Makes it easier to maintain, build, and cross-build. By default, the Makefile will now only build for the native OS. See the new file BUILDING.md for further information.
• Created subdirectory “firmware” for holding firmware related files including a LICENSE file. I also received some additional documentation from Jens Schoenfeld on programming the MK3 and MK4 and a file with firmware revision history saved here as firmware/Changelog.
• To be less generic, renamed “testhist” binary to “cwtsthst”, still keeping to MS-DOS’s 8.3 file naming convention.
• Update code base to be 64-bit clean. Fixed all known problems but some may remain.
• Changed to using semantic versioning for version ID.
