PLANT SELECTOR A SERIOUS PROGRAMME FOR THE HORTICULTURALIST PLANT SELECTOR is an important program, particularly because, as far as we know, it is the first of its kind for the TRS-80 and SYSTEM 80 machines. It has been written up in a number of gardening and horticulture magazines, where it has achieved a very high level of interest both to the professional and amateur. Given the complexity of the subject in that there are literally hundreds of thousands of plants in the world, it is rather surprising that nobody has come up with this idea before, because it really is a natural for a microcomputer. Especially as the objective of the program is to select a plant, once certain parameters have been allocated. This type of repetitive chore is, as we all know, a procedure at which the computer really excels. The program consists of two major sections the first, Plant Retrieval, allows the user to select up to nine characteristics for any plant species. The second, the Plants for Specific Sites, maintains a series of data files containing lists of species for various locations. Characteristics of the individual species have been extracted from as many sources as possible, all have been verified using 'The Royal Horticulture Society's Dictionary of Gardening', and where appropriate the 'Eighth Edition of Bean's Trees and Shrubs'. The data files supplied with this program fill four disks and contain over 5,300 plant names. The files are capable of holding a maximum of 12,000 species and hence, it follows that the files can be expanded by the user. It would also, of course, be possible to start the files entirely from scratch, although bearing in mind the work the author has already put in, it might be a somewhat foolhardy exercise. Individual species are given a general coding to describe their major characteristics. For example, large or small trees, deciduous or evergreen, right down to specific coding to categorise minor points such as aromatic foliage and decorative flowers. A maximum of nine and a minimum of four individual characteristics can be selected for any individual species. The program differentiates between frost-hardy and frost-tender species. One of the advantages inherent in the ability to add plants to the files is that the program will allow the user to build up individual files for localised areas. This means that our users throughout Australasia can encode personal knowledge, thereby making either generalised or very specific files. Plant retrieval parameters, with some appropriate comments, are as follows: Frost Hardy or Frost Tender In this context of the program hardy means the little or no damage occurs during the average winter. Deciduous or Evergreen Some evergreens are placed in both files. Plant Size Small to medium species. Medium to large species. Flowering Season Species have been allocated the flowering period given in Hilliers catalogue but this can be changed to suit local conditions. Foliage Type Typical green; red/purple; golden/yellow; silver/grey; variegated Plant Habit Fastigiate/erect; pendulous/arching; contorted/twisting; spreading/suckering; prostrate/low growing (and ground cover); typical habit. Minor Characteristics Bold/attractive foliage; striking autumn colour; ornamental fruits; fragrant/attractive flowers; aromatic foliage, rapid/strong growth; moderate growth; ornamental bark/spiney branches. It is possible to run Plant Selector on a single drive machine, but it would mean, of course, that a fair proportion of the disk is taken up with the system and it follows from this that the data files will have to be somewhat shorter. In order to make it easier for single drive owners, the data files are supplied in a sufficiently small length so that they will fit on a stripped down system disk. THE PLAYFUL PROFESSOR is a mathematical tutorial that provides instruction in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, with or without fractions. The program places the user(s) in a 60 room mansion haunted by an intelligent ghost who holds the key to the only exit. Correct problem answers are rewarded with moves through the castle. Incorrect answers prompt a full screen tutorial in a step-by-step, blackboard format that is easily understood by most children. Options include 3 difficulty levels, choice of problem type, one or two players, and split difficulty levels to allow parent and child to compete equally. A 'Pass' feature allows input of a password to bypass the problems and leave only the game. Graphics are fast and extensive. All aspects of solving, including finding common denominators, reducing to lowest terms, and graphic long division are included. The Playful Professor was judged one of the Top Ten Educational Programs by Robert Jackson, Mead School, as published in Microcomputers in Education, Vol. 1 No. 10. He says 'every home with children and a computer should own this program. At the Mead School we use it daily.' Package Plots Graphs Plot-80 is a software plotting package for both dot matrix and daisy wheel printers. Plot-80 is for use with the TRS-80 Model I with 48K, one disk drive, and one of several graphics printers. The system is geared towards the plotting of graphs and histograms with numbered and labeled axes. Plot-80 is available on a formatted disk (specify track format). Single drive owners must supply a disk with operating system or add $15 to the package cost for a TRSDOS disk. The program operates with Base-2, Paper Tiger (with graphics option), Gencom, Qume, Xerox, Diablo and NEC Spinwriter. Printer and interface must be specified when ordering. If you own a Prowriter, Epson, Radio Shack Line Printer VIII, or Legend 880 or 1200, we've got the answer: PLOT80, a 'graphics line processor'. To help you understand that the concept of a graphics line processor, consider the following from the Introduction in the PLOT80 manual: Modern printers can do graphics as well as text. So why are most of them only doing text? Because a thousand words has been so much easier than one picture! Why has text been so much easier than graphics? For the main answer to that one, just contrast what word processors can do with what graphics software has provided. Graphics has had the rudimentary ability to draw lines on paper. Analogously, a word processor can copy words to paper. Who'd pay fifty or a hundred or more dollars for a word processor if that were all it could do? The BASIC ROM's LPRINT function can do that much! To help you evaluate the features graphics software should provide, consider the many points of similarity between Text Word Processing and what we will call 'Graphics Line Processing'. Scientific Graphs PlotPro is a set of three MicroSoft Basic programs that make scientific graphs on any 80- or 132-column printer. It creates linear, semi-logarithmic, and full logarithmic plots and can plot multiple functions on the same graph. The programs also support forced scaling and auto-scaling, as well as optional grid lines to aid in graph interpretation. One of the programs, ProTemp, creates templates of the physical appearance of the graph. With these templates you can specify the type of scaling, axis labeling, ranges for each axis, user-specified control characters, and other information. The ProQuick module controls plotting and printing of infinite length graphs limited only by paper length. Besides producing graphs, you can also use PlotPro to generate vertical formats suitable for reports, view-graphs, and so on. PlotPro requires no special plotters or complicated data interfaces.
