PACK/UNPACK - HIGH DENSITY STORAGE ON REGULAR DISKETTES Before you sink into the depth of despair with regard to the price of a doubler or double density drives, closely consider this program as an alternative. PACK/UNPACK is the software approach to high density. A regular diskette on the TRS-80 will store 89,600 bytes. With PACK/UNPACK it will store 117,740 bytes - about 30% increase! Surprisingly it does this relatively simply. Of the 256 possible combinations for an ASCII character only 64 are used for lower case letters, numerals and special characters. The remainder are for lower case, graphics and tab codes - some are not used at all. These 64 characters can be stored in only 6 bits but in Disk Basic they are manipulated in 8 bit bytes. These extra bits are used in this program to increase the data storage. In other words, for each regular 3 bytes, PACK/UNPACK will store 4. The major advantage of this program is that it performs its own input/output operations so effectively that all the user has to do is to give it the data. The program is in machine code and will usually be added to a Basic program as a subroutine, called by a Basic USR statement. Package 1 [DELETE and NAME]MISSING
PACKAGE 1 Have you ever backed-up a diskette only to end up killing off a dozen unwanted files. It can get quite tedious typing in all those file names. Well now there's a program for you! DELETE is one of those invaluable programs you'll find yourself depending on more and more. It can be used to kill off unwanted files after a back-up, or you can use it to eliminate development programs once the final copy is finished. DELETE comes with a number of switches, the functions of which are too numerous to mention here. Needless to say, DELETE is quite complete. NAME has only one function and that is the rewriting of the DOS and date block in your diskette directory. The reasons for wanting to use this program are many, but we will only mention three. First, NAME can protect your diskette from theft by placing your name or initials in the DOS section of the directory. Second, by placing your disk number in the date section you can make finding a program a lot easier. Lastly you can use name to number your diskettes for D.D.M.S., DISKETTE DIRECTORY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM, but that's another program. These two programs will receive constant use, and at only $15.95 you'd be foolish to pass them by.

Package 2 [BATCH and MULF and XFER]MISSING
PACKAGE 2 Package 2 consists of three programs. That's right, three! The first is BATCH, a DOS command batch processor. What is a DOS command batch processor? Well, lets suppose you had a certain routine at the beginning of each day which consisted of backing up your previous days data, setting the system clock, finding out the free space on each diskette, turning the clock on, loading BASIC, and executing your program. BATCH could do all that upon power-up in a blink of an eye, well maybe two blinks. Second is MULF, a user defined key program. In short, MULF lets you specify a function or set of functions for each key, and that includes the <shift> set (ie. <shift> E). However, the best feature is that each key is USER defined, and since the definitions are on a file you can change them anytime you wish. MULF will also allow you to respond to the questions of machine language and BASIC programs, prior to their being asked. There's just no limit to the things that MULF can do! PaDS and PRO-PaDS - by Roy Soltoff Katzan, in OPERATING SYSTEMS, A PRAGMATIC APPROACH, defines a Partitioned Data Set (PDS) as 'a data file that is divided into sequentially organized members.' Katzan further states, 'Each PDS includes a directory that points to the beginning of each member. Data sets of this type are most frequently used to store object programs - each member corresponds to a single object program. The PDS as a whole is referred to as a library. Operating system libraries and user libraries are stored in this fashion.' This definition describes exactly, the two LIB files in LDOS, SYS6/SYS and SYS7/SYS [and SYS8/SYS in TRSDOS 6.x]. The PDS structure has provided a technique for combining separately executable object programs into one file thereby saving directory slots. It also saves time by not having to load an entire 10K-15K file just to get a few hundred bytes or a few thousand bytes of program loaded if all LIB commands were just one big file. The system overhead of having to read and search the member directory is minimal. Up until now, only the system library has supported the PDS structure. Now, with this PaDS utility from MISOSYS, you can have 'user' PDS structures. The PaDS command can be used to create custom libraries. A library could be a collection of a dozen utility programs - all stored under one name but directly executable by specifying the library name followed by the member name. Consider for a moment, that you have built a library containing CMDFILE, DSMBLR, FED, BINHEX, EDAS, and XREF. The library name MYLIB was chosen. You can then execute EDAS by entering: MYLIB(EDAS) at the LDOS ready prompt. If you wanted to build a custom LDOS command library, you could use CMDFILE to extract DIR, COPY, KILL, DEBUG, ROUTE, and RESET from SYS6/SYS and SYS7/SYS and build them into a user SYSLIB. Then you could kill off SYS6 and SYS7 which would save about 15K from your 'custom' SYSTEM disk. When you want to do a directory, you would only need to type: SYSLIB(DIR) :2 (A,I) to achieve the same result as if you had typed DIR :2 (A,I) on a regular SYSTEM disk. Albeit you could have named your user library, 'S' and save the entering of five characters each time you wanted to execute a member of the library. That would let you use 'S(DIR)'! PDS also allows you to abbreviate the member's name to as few characters as uniquely identify it. If 'DIR' was the only member starting with the letter 'D', you could even have entered, 'S(D) ' The PaDS command is itself a Partitioned Data Set and supplies the following functions via installed members: o APPEND - Appends a new member to the existing PDS and updates the member directory and ISAM table records. o BUILD - Creates a new Partitioned Data Set. The PDS is composed of a Front End Loader program, a MEMBER directory, and an ISAM table. o COPY - Transfers an image of a PDS member from the PDS to a designated file. o DIR - Provides a directory listing for each member with its name, type, date of addition, and file space occupied. o KILL - Makes a member inaccessible for access. o LIST - Will list a specific member in standard hex format or ASCII. o PURGE - Removes killed member(s) from the PDS and compresses the file to reclaim the space previously occupied by the killed member(s). o RESTORE - Restores a killed file to accessibility. PAGE FILE - AN ELECTRONIC BOOK PAGE FILE is to some extent a specialised database in the sense that its format is quite unique. The title of the program probably best describes it. If you imagine a loose-leaf binder upon which you can write whatever you wish and then turn to another page, write something else, turn back if you so wish, and so on, you are getting pretty close to an understanding of PAGE FILE. Of course there is the provision to search the book. All one has to enter is the alphanumeric word or collection of characters required and instruct the search. It will then come up with the first occurrence and then proceed to each further occurrence. This feature is in fact an Instring search with the ability of being able to pick out parts of words or strings of figures. The editing features of PAGE FILE are quite comprehensive. First of all a page may be deleted, leaving of course a blank page. This may then be filled in with other data. There is the facility for repagination, that is to say, you can shift pages around the file. You can exchange pages, or better still, you can copy one page to another. Essentially, this feature allows you to manipulate and duplicate information easily. To enhance the program, the author has also included facilities for drawing diagrams, pictures, borders, and indeed any other graphic portrayal within the capabilities of the machine. PAI PRICE ADJUSTMENT INDICES Although it is not generally known, we maintain a register at Molimerx of highly specialised programs, of which we gain knowledge. Normally they have been submitted to us for publication, but do not have sufficient general appeal to warrant inclusion in the catalogue. With regard to these programs we essentially act as a clearing house, bringing together enquiries for a specific type of program and the authors of such software. PAI may be considered to fall into this category in that it is specific to the Surveying and Building Contracting industries. It did seem to us, however, to be of such importance as a piece of software that we should publicise it in this catalogue. We are, therefore, stocking it in our normal way, but in fairness must make the point that it is a specialised type of program. It is indispensable for both Quantity Sureveyors and Building Contractors, who operate as Main or General Contractors. In the building industry, indices are published monthly for labour and materials used in building contracts. First of all we should explain what the industry indices are. They indicate the relative level of increase or decrease at a specific date as compared with a date that has been taken as the standard. In some ways they can be likened to the Retail Price Index. These indices come in two forms, namely Firm indices and Provisional indices. The former are produced some two or three months after the month to which they apply and the latter are provisional for the interim period. PAI is a versatile program and makes provision for the entry not only of the Base index (entry at the start of the contract), but also monthly up-dates to both the Firm and Provisional indices as the contract progresses. There are forty-nine work categories which cover the entire spectrum of types of work within the building industry. PAI handles all forty-nine categories and in addition specialised engineering and labour only indices are supported. An additional feature of the program is that provision is made for retentions, materials and labour at the start of the contract. From these indices the program calculates the fluctuations in Work Categories (which are user specified) throughout the life of the contract on a month by month basis and a hardcopy of the valuation is made. In this way the Contractor can at a glance determine the percentage increase/decrease in each of his work categories as the contract continues. A valuation record is also available giving the net payment and also displays running totals of work valued and fluctuations thereon.

New I/III Language Pajaro (pronounced Pa-ha-ro) is a new software system for 48K Models I/III. It requires one disk drive, works with most DOSes, and includes a full screen editor and user library. Pajaro is a high-level language, similar in syntax to Basic, with a number of extensions such as user-defined commands and statements. A Do command lets users load a precompiled program with local variables, then return to the original program or Do another while the main program is still in memory. Sound, Draw, and 2-byte PEEK and POKE commands are included, and both random and sequential files are supported. The math package features integer and 32-place floating point variables. The package is meant to reduce the time spent in software development. Users can call their own specialized routines at any time; once a program is compiled by Pajaro's Mule (Multi-User Language Encoding) system, it requires few changes for compatibility with other computers (IBM PC and Apple II units are planned for early 1984).
