All that glitters is not gold OS-80 Bridging the TRS-80 software compatibility gap Compatibility between TRS-80 Model I diskettes and the new Model III is about as genuine as a gold-plated lead Krugerrand. True, Model I TRSDOS diskettes can be read on a Model III. But first they must be converted and re-recorded for Model III operation. And you cannot write to a Model I TRSDOS diskette. Not with a Model III. You cannot add a file. Delete a file. Or in any way modify a Model I TRSDOS diskette with a Model III computer. Furthermore, your converted TRSDOS diskettes cannot be converted back for Model I operation. TRSDOS is a one-way street. And there's no retreating. A point to consider before switching the company's payroll to your new Model III. Real software compatibility should allow the direct, immediate interchangeability of Model I and Model III diskettes. No read-only limitations, no conversion/re-recording steps and no chance to be left high and dry with Model III diskettes that can't be run on a Model I. What's the answer? The answer is Percom's OS-80 family of TRS-80 disk operating systems. OS-80 programs allow direct, immediate interchangeability of Model I and Model III diskettes. You can run Model I single-density diskettes on a Model III; install Percom's plug-in DOUBLER adapter in your Model I, and you can run double-density Model III diskettes on a Model I. There's no conversion, no re-recording. Slip an OS-80 diskette out of your Model I and insert it directly in a Model III. And vice-versa. Just have the correct OS-80 disk operating system - OS-80, OS-80D or OS-80/III - in each computer. Moreover, with OS-80 systems, you can add, delete, and update files. You can read and write diskettes regardless of the system of origin. OS-80 is the original Percom TRS-80 DOS for BASIC programmers. Even OS-80 utilities are written in BASIC. OS-80 is the Percom system about which a user wrote, in Creative Computing magazine, ' the best $30.00 you will ever spend.' Requiring only seven Kbytes of memory, OS-80 disk operating systems reside completely in RAM. There's no need to dedicate a drive exclusively for a system diskette. And, unlike TRSDOS, you can work at the track sector level, defining and controlling data formats - in BASIC - to create simple or complex data structures that execute more quickly than TRSDOS files. The Percom OS-80 DOS supports single-density operation of the Model I computer - price is $29.95; the OS-80D supports double-density operation of Model I computers equipped with a DOUBLER or DOUBLER II; and, OS-80/III - for the Model III of course - supports both single- and double-density operation.
