HYPERCROSS Written by M.J. Gingell Distributed by Hypersoft If you exchange programs or data with friends that use a different brand of computer, you haven't been able to just swap disks with them because your computer couldn't read their disks, and vise-versa. Not until now, anyway. HYPERCROSS is a program that resolves much of the incompatibility that has existed between disk formats. HYPERCROSS will actually format diskettes on your lowly TRS-80 that can run on almost seventy (70) machines/environments. Supported formats include all versions of PCDOS and MSDOS, and most popular versions of CP/M, including all versions of Radio Shack and Montezuma Micro CP/M and the standard 8 inch CP/M format. Machines supported include just about everything you can think of, including Sanyo, Osborne, Morrow, Lobo, Keypro, HP, Epson, Cromemco, Televideo, Xerox, Zenith and many others I've never even heard of. Certain formats do require double sided drives. You will not find a better tool for building your program library. HYPERCROSS gives special consideration for various file types and whether the 'Control-Z', hex 1A, is added to the end of the file. You can get a directory and kill files from both the TRS-80 disk and the foreign disk. Files can be copied both ways. HYPERCROSS eliminates the need for modems, terminal programs and a second computer. HYPERCROSS runs as a standard /CMD file from most popular TRS-80 disk operating systems. Make sure you specify whether you wish the Model I, III, 4 or MAX-80 version. LNW and Genie users should order the Model I version. HYPERCROSS also features a built-in HELP function that details everything you need to know. Even though a 20-page manual is included, you will probably not need it after the first couple of uses. Hyperlight Patrol We appreciate this opportunity to tell you about Hyperlight Patrol. Written by Warren L. Greene for a 48K Disk TRS-80, this unique program provides sound output via the cassette port and voice output for a Radio Shack Speech Synthesizer. The latter is not required for play. In Hyperlight Patrol, your single Star Cruiser must locate and if possible destroy a fleet consisting of unknown numbers of four different classes of enemy ships. Unlike the Klingons, Cylons, etc. of most space games, these enemy ships maneuver intelligently in the three-dimensional space around you and can move as you do by hyperlight jumps. They have, as you do, many systems which can be disabled or destroyed. Your ability to recognize and capitalize of their damage, while maneuvering to minimize the effect of your own, can be a key element in your victory or defeat. To help you overcome the numerical odds, your ship is 'human engineered' with systems which can automatically follow or fire on targets you designate, can maintain your shields within the limits of your energy banks, and can signal when hostile ships appear within weapons range. Sound effects and visual displays indicate damage, weapon status, alarms, etc. and help you input commands. The author is an expert in war-games and war technology. His intention in writing this program was to produce a conflict simulation which would realistically create the command environment of a ships captain in the distant future. He has tried to avoid the torpedo-course-guessing and hand-eye coordination elements so common to todays science-fiction games. The viewscreen you work from also reflects this philosophy. As in a real conflict the enemy can be all around you, and you can see exactly this in the 'projection-map' display. A totally new concept in TRS-80 games, this display continuously updates the position of each enemy ship as they circle you, close in, or try to escape. Our screen is of course flat and two-dimensional, like a wall map of the earth, but within the limits of TRS-80 graphics it will show you the 'globe' of space around you - front, sides, back, above, below, etc. The action in this sphere is real-time. Again as in reality there are periods of rest and inaction, punctuated by bursts of tactical scrambling. To survive and score, you must constantly evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, speeds, and relative positions of your own ship and the enemy. The information presented to you is purposely kept brief so that you can handle it. The computer takes care of the great complexity of the simulation, as it should, leaving to you only those decisions requiring intelligence and judgement. This is not a trivial or an easy game, but it is addicting and fun to play. You must be prepared to learn by experience the best strategies and (a completely different question) the best tactics. It will take some time for you to become familiar with your ship and with the mechanics of the simulation. There's a lot going on in the 28K of code that you will not immediately appreciate. Don't let this be discouraging. Everything here has a reason and as you become more proficient at the game, you will find yourself turning former weaknesses into present strengths. Certainly Hyperlight Patrol is not the be-all and end-all of space conflict games. Remember that it is first and foremost a simulation. One could write a game with more graphics. One could write a game with more action, or more sound, or whatever. And any of these could nevertheless be conventional and dull. Hyperlight Patrol is different. Greene for a 48K Disk TRS-80, this unique program provides sound output via the cassette port and voice output for a Radio Shack Speech Synthesizer. The latter is not required for play. In Hyperlight Patrol, your single Star Cruiser must locate and if possible destroy a fleet consisting of unknown numbers of four different classes of enemy ships. Unlike the Klingons, Cylons, etc. of most space games, these enemy ships maneuver intelligently in the three-dimensional space around you and can move as you do by hyperlight jumps. They have, as you do, many systems which can be disabled or destroyed. Your ability to recognize and capitalize of their damage, while maneuvering to minimize the effect of your own, can be a key element in your victory or defeat. To help you overcome the numerical odds, your ship is 'human engineered' with systems which can automatically follow or fire on targets you designate, can maintain your shields within the limits of your energy banks, and can signal when hostile ships appear within weapons range. Sound effects and visual displays indicate damage, weapon status, alarms, etc. and help you input commands. The author is an expert in war-games and war technology. His intention in writing this program was to produce a conflict simulation which would realistically create the command environment of a ships captain in the distant future. He has tried to avoid the torpedo-course-guessing and hand-eye coordination elements so common to todays science-fiction games. The viewscreen you work from also reflects this philosophy. As in a real conflict the enemy can be all around you, and you can see exactly this in the 'projection-map' display. A totally new concept in TRS-80 games, this display continuously updates the position of each enemy ship as they circle you, close in, or try to escape. Our screen is of course flat and two-dimensional, like a wall map of the earth, but within the limits of TRS-80 graphics it will show you the 'globe' of space around you - front, sides, back, above, below, etc. The action in this sphere is real-time. Again as in reality there are periods of rest and inaction, punctuated by bursts of tactical scrambling. To survive and score, you must constantly evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, speeds, and relative positions of your own ship and the enemy. The information presented to you is purposely kept brief so that you can handle it. The computer takes care of the great complexity of the simulation, as it should, leaving to you only those decisions requiring intelligence and judgement. This is not a trivial or an easy game, but it is addicting and fun to play. You must be prepared to learn by experience the best strategies and (a completely different question) the best tactics. It will take some time for you to become familiar with your ship and with the mechanics of the simulation. There's a lot going on in the 28K of code that you will not immediately appreciate. Don't let this be discouraging. Everything here has a reason and as you become more proficient at the game, you will find yourself turning former weaknesses into present strengths. Certainly Hyperlight Patrol is not the be-all and end-all of space conflict games. Remember that it is first and foremost a simulation. One could write a game with more graphics.
