Help categorize the TRS-80 software archive

Nearly 30,000 programs, and almost none of them say what kind of program they are. Mark whatever you recognize. Pick as many words as fit — a game that teaches arithmetic is Game, Math, Education — then send the page. Everything is reviewed by hand before it goes anywhere near the archive, so a best guess is worth more than a blank.

Important Note: Do not do multiple entries of the same program. If you flag Super Nova by Big Five once, all Super Nova by Big Five entries will get updated. No need to waste your time flagging each Super Nova

Basic Answer v1.0.4 [Serial Number TBA-20029]

Logical Systems Inc

M1 · 1982 · DMK

bas104ls.zip

45 LSI Catalog L-21-010 / L-21-011 The Basic Answer 8970 North 55th Street/P.O. Box 23956/Milwaukee, WI 53223/(414) 355-5454 1984 The BASIC Answer (TBA) is a text pre-processor utility for writing BASIC programs. It allows the programmer to construct a BASIC program in a structured manner, without line numbers. 'Source' code for TBA can be created with almost any word processor or text editor. In a pinch, even the BASIC interpreter can be used to generate source code. TBA utilizes labels for transferring control to procedures rather than line numbers. Branching is done via these labels instead of line numbers (for example: GOSUB @SORT.NAMES or even GOTO @ASK.FOR.ANSWER). Because line number references are no longer significant, whole blocks of code may be moved or relocated without worrying about line numbers. TBA supports variable names of up to fourteen alphanumeric characters (For example: time.delay%). These 'long' variable names are then automatically reduced to unique two-character names during processing. At the same time, all label references are resolved to line numbers, and TBA outputs a file that may be directly loaded and run by the BASIC interpreter. The compression of variable names and removal of remark statements from the output code maximizes both the speed and memory efficiency of the resulting program. The 'source' code remains in its eminently readable form for ease of analysis and debugging. Optionally, a cross-reference listing may also be produced. TBA also offers 'conditional translation.' This allows whole sections of code to be selected or deselected during processing. 'Machine-dependent' code becomes much easier to produce. Order L-21-010 for LDOS 5.1, or L-21-011 for TRSDOS 6 (LS-TBA).

BASIC INSERT - SOPHISTICATED STRING MANIPULATION A basic definition of this program is easy to give. It will take the contents of a string variable and insert it into a stipulated line of a Basic program. Its uses, however, are many and varied. This magic, incidently, is carried out by a machine language program which is accessed by a subroutine with the USR statement whenever needed. Let's look at some of the applications. Assuming that you have a string variable equal to X=10:Y=20 the program will, on command, tokenise the string and insert it into a dummy line in your existing Basic program. The newly inserted line can then be branched to and the contents of that line (as it is now tokenised) will be treated by the interpreter as if it were part of the original program. This is a powerful tool. Consider, for instance, a series of calculations stored on disk or tape in ASCII format. This may be read into your own Basic program and then inserted into the actual program and executed. It should be emphasised that although the program could be used for string packing for graphics machine language manipulation, it is not a string packing routine as such, (for this purpose we recommend you purchase CRAYON) for the string is actually tokenised and inserted into a dummy line, whereafter it forms an integral part of the routine. To recapitulate, the three principal applications for this routine are: . To store machine language code in a line of your program, thus alleviating the necessity of carrying out a System load of a separate machine language module. To store graphic code in a string to give fast graphic output to the screen. By far the most useful function, to take calculations from storage and automatically place them into dummy lines in an existing program.
