Site News (2001-2003)

January 2, 2001

  • Jason Brady has sent 59 disks which I received and converted to DSK’s yesterday. I will be going theough them soon, so look for new software in the next few days.

January 8, 2001

  • Added a Link to Jeff Vavasour’s On-Line Level I Emulator
  • The TOSEC people will be releasing a TRS-80 ORCH-80/85/90 database of the first 1322 ORCH files I have renamed shortly. It will be available through ROMDOCTOR. What RD does is scan your files and rename them according to size and CRC to a uniform name. I still have not gotten any volunteers, so the project is all me and slow going. I am about 1/2 way done through the ORCH’s. Eventually, I do intend to do the Model I, III, and IV files so that people can be clear about their collections.

January 12, 2001

  • The TOSEC page has recently been updated with a bunch of new RomDoctor data files, including 1,322 ORCH-80/85/90 names
  • I don’t normally do this, but this page could be one of the funniest things I have ever read.
  • Charles Grisamore is lending a hand with the ORCH renaming … Charles – Thank you!

January 14, 2001

  • I have added Jeff Vavasour’s updated CoCo II emulator on the CoCo page.
  • Today is probably the last day to click my banner. As always, please order through the site if you order from Amazon.

February 3, 2001

  • I am contemplating converting my hosting from NETCOM dialup to EARTHLINK no-dialup to save some money now that I have no site revenue. I have pretty much gotten it to the point where my netcom email is only getting spam. This transition MAY cause a disruption in the site, since I have no confidence in Earthlinks ability to make the purely internal transition smoothly. If you can’t get the site, it isn’t down – it’s earthlink messing up.
  • The TOSEC list has been submitted. Special thanks to Charles Grisamore (of ORCH-90 fame) for cataloging R-Z.

February 8, 2001

  • Thank those of you who emailed suggestions – I have elected the Amazon.com honor program, which now appears on my ads page. All support is appreciated.
  • There is independent development going on by Spoiler of TOSEC databases for the Model 1, 3, and 4 stuff – So those of you with collections may soon have a way of weeding out the good from the bad (and dupes).
  • I have not forgotten about the disks I have received … I anticipate getting to them shortly.

February 14, 2001

  • Happy Valentines Day.
  • I did some more software conversions, but they are at home … I will post them tomorrow.
  • I am on the phone with Earthlink now (actually, on hold — my call will be answered in twenty-one—minutes) … again, if the site seems to go down, it is just Earthlink failing to handle a simple transaction. While it may not work, don’t forget that the IP for the site is 207.221.40.207 (but that may change too).
  • I had to call Earthlink back … that was only 16 minutes. I did not place the order, but when I do it is a full site move – IP address and domain shift. I anticipate doing this on Tuesday. They claim that they leave both sites up simulatenously so that while NSI does its work, it’s always pointing to a working site. I’ll believe that when I see it. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that if it goes down about Tues-Wed of next week, it is not permanently down.

The next casualty is the message board. I got this today …

Dear InsideTheWeb message board owner, Since January 1997, InsideTheWeb has provided free message boards to online communities. Our goal has always been to offer an easy-to-use and technically superior format for threaded discussions. Though we have hit a few bumps along the way, we feel we have succeeded in that ideal. As some of you may know, internet advertising revenues have fallen to extremely low levels over the past several months. Supporting a community service such as InsideTheWeb is impossible without a secure source of funding and we are being forced to close our doors. While there are certainly other means of generating income, we do not have the ability to address them without sustaining significant losses in the foreseeable future. Therefore, as of March 5th, we will be shutting down all InsideTheWeb message boards. Because you have worked hard to build your message board, we have provided you with a feature in the control center that will allow you to save your board’s contents to your local computer. To access this feature, simply login from http://www.InsideTheWeb.com, select “Download Board Data” from the drop down list, and click “Go!”. Next, just click each button for the type of data you wish to save. We sincerely appreciate your patronage and support and hope that you will be able to find another forum that can meet your needs. We have thoroughly enjoyed talking with many of you over the years and wish you the very best. It is people like you that made InsideTheWeb the best message board community on the internet! Thank you! Regards, InsideTheWeb Customer Service

  • For those of you in the general emulation community, please keep in mind that all your TRS-80 are belong to us.
  • The old netcom servers seem to be back again. Earthlink has the audacity to charge a setup fee for doing them the favor of relocating from their legacy servers to their current ones. Needless to say, I have no intention of letting them charge that.
  • The old netcom servers seem REAL slow … I think I am going to put in the order to move the site today.

  • RomCenter has support for the TRS-80 basic/cmd programs, courtesy of TOSEC. The programs can be found at http://www.romcenter.com/download.htm and the DAT files can be found at http://www.emuhq.com/tosec/dattable.htm. The Model 1 DAT file handles 3375 files, the Model 3 DAT file handles 1112 files, and the Model 4 DAT file handles 1212 files. RomDoctor, which is a TOSEC product, will not support these models as RomDoctor supports renaming of the underlying file, which would make running the programs impossible as the long filenames don’t quite work under NewDos/80. RomCenter will merely audit your trs-80 library.
  • Dave Keil has updated his COCO II emulator to v1.10. He also has uploaded a number of COCO Cartridges. Find the emulator on the Emulator page.
  • I finished the 5.25’s from the most recent batch! There are still plenty more unsorted to go …

March 5, 2001

I was strolling through the net (one day …), and I came upon a discontinued Model I emulator. It is source code only, written in Acorn Desktop C. It is available on the emulator page.

March 6, 2001

After 1,000,000 million requests from people, I am pleased to bring SPACE WARP online. We all have Dave Keil to thank for this, who had it on one of his disks.

March 8, 2001

  • Tim Mann has updated his XTRS emulator to v4.4. XTRS runs on the UNIX operating system. Download it from the Emulator page.
  • http://members.aol.com/trs80emul/ is no more … farewell, old friend – whoever you were.

March 9, 2001

  • Dave Keil has updated his coco emulator to v1.2. Download it from the Emulator page.
  • Nick Andrew is currently ‘donating’ 170 disk images to the archive. The first 57 DSK’s have been received. I will be converting those as quickly as I can. There are also two other people out there, with 40 and 400 disks each, who I am speaking with. Let’s keep our fingers crossed, and THANK YOU NICK!

Well … after 2 1/2 years I finally broke down and decided to replace my Dell XPS R450. I have ordered:

  • CUSL2C, 400Watt Power Supply Full Tower (with extra Fan), 16X Pioneer DVD Player, 3 1/2″ Floppy, and 1GHZ P3 from Monarch Computers [no tax];
  • SoundBlaster Live 5.1, Keyboard, and Intellimouse from Buy.com [Free Shipping]
  • Linksys BEFSR41 Router from Amazon.com [10% off and no tax, plus $30 rebate]
  • Linksys 10/100 Network Card and 30GB IBM 75GXP 7200RPM ATA-100 Hard Drive from Buy.com [Free Shipping]
  • 256MB PC133 Memory from crucial.com (the only place I will buy RAM from)
  • Since monitors, video cards and SCSI cards are too expensive, I am going to cannibalize those from the Dell for the time being.

Jonathan Berman has pointed out that Jeff Vavasour updated his Model I emulator to revision “F”, fixing the speed problem and the rs-232 causing crashes problem.

For those of you not familiar with the GOODxxx tools, an individual named COWERING has written command line tools which rename roms/programs based upon their crc’s. This is very useful for sorting out a messy colleciton. You may have seen discussions about the TOSEC databases for Model 1, 3, 4, and ORCH, but Cowering has written a GOOD utility for the COCO! Get it on the emulator page.

Serge Lachance has released his Model I Emulator called Ti-RS-80 … here’s what he says:

I’ve been working on my emulator lately and I got a new version. It is still not supporting disk units, but has a nice windows interface, a very nice debugger with a one-line assembler. The window is resizable. The speed evaluation is based on the real timing of each Z80 instructions and is updated every second or less. It supports the original TRS-80 keyboard mapping or the windows keyboard settings mapping. It can work with or without ROM image. If there’s a file “RomImage.mem” in the same directory as the emulator, it is loading it and using it. It can work in screen saver mode with an extension of “.SCR” or as an executable with an extension of “.EXE” In screen saver mode, the little preview screen works in the screen properties window.

  • As those of you who follow comp.sys.tandy may recall, Elmo J. had become intruiged by an ebay auction he saw for a Model 1 with an odd dos on the photographed screen. Although he did not win the auction, the seller sent him a copy of what was claimed to be TRSDOS v3.0 for the Model I. It is not a master (and contains random programs).

Tim Mann has just release v2.0 of his CatWeasel utilities. Here’s his general description:

Background: The Catweasel ISA floppy disk controller is an add-in card for the PC ISA bus. It uses specialized hardware, not a standard floppy disk controller chip, and it can be programmed to read and write just about any disk format. I’ve written a pair of programs for the Catweasel called cw2dmk and dmk2cw. dmk2cw is new in release 2.0 of the package. cw2dmk can use a Catweasel ISA to read several kinds of floppy disk, some of which ordinary PC controllers have trouble with, and save them in the DMK disk image format. DMK is a format used by the Unix TRS-80 emulator xtrs and by David Keil’s TRS-80 emulator for MS-DOS. cw2dmk does not just read TRS-80 disks. It can make an exact image of any disk written using a Western Digital 177x/179x floppy disk controller, a PC-style NEC765-compatible controller, or a Digital Equipment Corporation RX02 controller. dmk2cw uses a Catweasel ISA to write any DMK image back to a real floppy disk. It can handle the same kinds of disks as cw2dmk. Currently no tools other than TRS-80 emulators and dmk2cw can use disk images in DMK format, but perhaps more tools will be written in the future. The ability to read disks with cw2dmk and write out copies with dmk2cw already provides a useful way of archiving disks from old machines and making physical copies when needed. A likely future direction for cw2dmk/dmk2cw is to be able to write/read JV1 and JV3 disk images (these are other common TRS-80 emulator formats) or raw arrays of sectors, in cases where the disk can be represented in one of those formats. The programs are free software, released under the GPL. You can download the source code and executables for both Linux and MS-DOS from my TRS-80 resources page, http://www.tim-mann.org/trs80resources.html. The MS-DOS version also runs on Windows 95. Even those who prefer to build their own sampling hardware instead of buying a Catweasel may find the source code of some use.

The GoodCoco v0.999.3 COCO ROM set is complete!

August 1, 2001

James Brusewitz was kind enough to donate a missing LDOS version. He has provided LDOS v5.1.3/R for the Model I to the archive. He did a sector for sector dump, and has noted that the Radio Shack source disks were shipped with a deleted file, which had been designed to support double sided drives. The sector-by-sector copy has allowed this to remain intact as well. Note that these are DMK images.

August 14, 2001

  • I have a lead on a couple of new stashes of diskettes … let’s keep our fingers crossed
  • There are two new sets of hardware up on the For Sale page – both people interested in the TRS-80’s going to a loving home. Check it out.

August 14, 2001

Bill Hogue (of Big Five Software fame) has put up a website: http://www.bigfivesoftware.com. It is quite interesting.

September 2, 2001

Tim Mann has been busy – he has released v2.4 of his CatWeasel Utilities and v4.8 of his xtrs TRS-80 Emulator.

September 5, 2001

  • Thomas Ally has donated Blinking Cursor and Repeating Keys for Model I.
  • Neil Morrison has donated a new addition to the TRSDOS v1.3 Patches zip file.
  • Free Model 4’s to those willing to pick them up from Alexandria, VA – PLEASE DO NOT ASK THE DONATOR TO SHIP, he is elderly and cannot do it. See the For Sale page.

September 28, 2001

  • Sorry for the lack of updates … I am getting married in 6 weeks …
  • Earthlink (the host for www.trs-80.com) is FORCING a transition. It will occur no later than October 29th. I must read a bunch of stuff about the transition and change some settings. Just be aware that the site may be down for a few days at some point.

September 29, 2001

I have read up on this Earthlink transition. Nowhere in their faq does it make mention of what happens to the domain name. I will probably trigger the transition in the evening of Sunday, September 30th, so look for down time. They have a temporary mirror of the site at http://wfp46003.temp.w1.com, so if www.trs-80.com is down, try that.

September 30, 2001

I believe the site has already been transitioned. If this shows up, it has been, since I am only uploading this update to the new server.

October 4, 2001

The downloads are not working – the darn Earthlink cgi bin must be different than the Netcom one. We are looking into it..

October 9, 2001

  • How is it that people can take the time to compose lengthy emails about the downloads not working, but they cannot click the “NEWS” button to have seen that I know about it? Just a rant. Thank you.
  • I am dealing with earthlink. All the old CGI scripts were shell scripts and those, apparently, do not work on the Earthlink site. Lord Spambraticus of Borg has re-written them into Perl. The Perl tests out flawlessly on the Earthlink Perl Debugger. Of course, however, the earthlink servers won’t run them. That’s progress for ya. I will let you know when it is up and running.

October 10, 2001

This is never going to end at this rate. If ANYONE reading this has successfully gotten PERL redirect scripts to run on an Earthlink server, please email me. LSOB (see below news) seems to be having email difficulties (all my emails to him bounce, regardless of from where I send them), so I cannot communicate with him in resolution of this issue.

October 11, 2001

George Phillips has solved the PERL problem, and all downloads are now functional. Rob and George – Thank you!

October 13, 2001

I have been beefing up the POCKET COMPUTER sections including the main page (adding 6 pocket computers) and the pocket computer page. PLEASE help fill in any missing information!

October 14, 2001

Neil Morrison has created a web site dedicated to COCO Documentation —> http://members.tripod.com/coco_docs/index.htm.

October 23, 2001

  • Neil Morrison has provided the site with the Vidtex Escape Sequences.
  • Neil Morrison has provided the site with the Radio Shack Blackjack Documentation.

October 24, 2001

Model 102 available on the sale/trade page for the cost of packing and shipping. It is a complete system weighing 35 pounds, so don’t think you will be walking away with it for $20 … but its definitely a good move for someone with an eye for the system.

Juergen Buchmueller has written a TRS-80 Emulator in Java.

November 9, 2001

Excellent News. I am constantly being asked “I have a TRS-80 and want to sell it.” You know what, we have a company that has been in business a long time that buys these things. If you are in the market for a TRS-80, you can buy it from them (they work on them when they get them) without the risk of those EBAY people who ship broken merchandise and empty boxes (can you tell my feelings about EBAY?). Anyway, mosey on over to DCS Industries. Their site is Internet Explorer only though, Netscape doesn’t seem to work.

November 16, 2001

I understand that ender.com is down for a little while for maintenance and will be back in a few days, and that is where the files are hosted. Everyone will need to be patient, particularly since I am getting married in 2 days, and Ender.com is located in Australia where I would have no control over it anyway. Sorry for any inconvenience.

November 23, 2001

Just got back from my honeymoon to be greated by 7893478432 emails telling me the files are still not working. Since those people obviously do not read the news I guess this post will not help them. Anyway, Lord Spambraticus is on his way back to Australia and has advised me that the downloads will be restored by Monday the 26th. Sorry for any inconvenience.

November 29, 2001

Still no word on the downloads. If anyone out there has about 200MB of space they would like to pony up as a mirror, your emails would be welcome. All I would need is FTP access in and the URL of the files stored in whatever directory I was given. I can probably have downloads working within a day of that. Meanwhile, I am sure Rob continues to work on the current problem.

November 30, 2001

Space is being made available – two people offered (Thank you Alasdair and thank you Elmo). I will try to get the files up and running tomorrow. #-L in the Model 1 directory are back online now, though.

December 1, 2001

  • Thank you all for your offers. I think I am ok for now. The Emulators, Diskpaks, Disksets, Scott Adams, Coco, and Model I are back online.
  • I believe all downloads are now back online.
  • I have updated the woefully out of date Emulators page. Tim Mann is at v4.8, and Dave Keil is at 6.2.
  • I have added new info to the Model 1 Emulator page, including Jeff Vavasour’s Level 1 emulator and Jeff’s source code for his Model 1 emulator v3.02u and his Coco II Emulator v1.6.
  • Added Retrieve v1.3, written by Jeff Vavasour, can read Coco II and Coco III disks in an IBM drive for conversion. It can be found on the emulator page.
  • Added links to a System 80, LNW-80, and Video Genie page.

December 2, 2001

For those of you trying to buy TRS-80 equipment, give DCS Industries a try!

December 5, 2001

Yay – Ender.com (thank’s Rob) is back online and www.trs-80.co.uk is also online as a mirror. The Scripts have been updated to randomly choose a mirror location to ease up on bandwidth. If you click on a file and it doesn’t work, please tell me, but also please click on it again and it will pick up the other mirror. The UK mirror is not fully populated, but ender.com is. Thanks for the patience.

December 17, 2001

  • Some new diskettes (Model 1) are on their way to me from Lee Pauser. As a result, I have procured a Pentium/75 in my attempt to create a dedicated TRS-80 reading/writing machine. If there are any networking gurus out there, I could use a bit of help. Here’s the deal:
  • Because it is a Pentium/75 with 16MB of RAM, and because I do not want Windows ’98 interfering in the floppy reads, I have it booting into Windows ’98 DOS. Is there any way on this green planet of ours to get this machine to take part in my existing Linksys Cable Router network? It is currently 2 Windows ’98 machines, communicating only through file and printer sharing. I would love this third machine to be communicative as well because I need to get the converted programs on and off somehow.
  • Please email any suggestions. Thanks!

December 18, 2001

  • When Lee Pauser sent over the disks, he also included the manual to Tuesday Morning Quarterback. Download the 5MB PDF here.
  • I have ordered a Catweasel. This should make conversion of the Model I disks much easier thank’s to Tim Mann’s Catweasel Utilities v2.4.

December 19, 2001

  • I have been sitting on this forever, and I must apologize both to Phil Ereaut and to the site’s users. Philipe has written an amazing MSDOS based DSK/DMK Utility (now v3.0) which will walk the disk sectors of a DSK/DMK file. It will also disclose the track count, density, etc., and, for NewDos/80 disks, disclose the PDRIVE setting applicable to that DSK/DMK file. It is wonderful. You can download it here.
  • Thank you all for your networking suggestions. Solutions included Laplink (which I did use last night to get the latest software over) and Windows for Workgroups (which would run on such an underpowered system because it wouldn’t be underpowered for those days). However, with the purchase of the Catweasel, I will not need to use the Pentium — I will put the Catweasel in the Dell, with the motherboard hooked to the 3.5″ and the catweasel onto the 5.25″ (the catweasel does not provide for drive letter access and functions independently of any floppy drive controller). The Dell is fully networked by Windows ’98.

If anyone has a paper copy, and can check the text (especially the hex codes), it would be appreciated. I have tried to change all bad values into “??”, but many things could not be so easily cured. It DESPERATELY needs a proofread by someone with a hard copy. They can be found on the NewDos80 Zaps Page.
  • Tim Mann has released XTRS v4.9 .

May 13, 2002

I have added a CLONES page to the site, inspired largely because of the amazingly detailed SYSTEM 80 site and LNW80 site.

Tim Mann has released v2.7 of the CW2DMK Utility. According to Tim (cut and paste alert) Version 2.7a of my Catweasel Floppy Read/Write Tools is now available at http://www.tim-mann.org/trs80resources.html. This release adds a program (jv2dmk) to convert JV1 and JV3 floppy disk images (the formats used by Jeff Vavasour’s and Matthew Reed’s emulators) to DMK format. This is mostly useful as an intermediate step if you want to write one of those floppy images to a real disk with the Catweasel hardware, but you can also use it just to convert between the different emulator formats, even if you don’t have a Catweasel.

  • I have won an ebay auction (my 3rd – I’m not a fan of the service) for some 80-Micros. I am going to try to scan them.
  • I have modified the program I wrote to generate my download pages – including a case insensitive sort – which should, for example, lump all of NewDos/80, NEWDOS/80, and Newdos/80 together now.

August 29, 2002

  • John Mineur graciously donated some Model 4D pictures to complete the TRS-80 picture line. Thank you very much John.

September 16, 2002

  • For those of you not following comp.sys.tandy, I am scanning an 80 Micro. How it would get distributed is beyond me. If you have 330MB to spare on an FTP site, please let me know.

September 18, 2002

  • Nick Andrew has offered up space for the 80-Micro. Stay tuned.
  • I would be negligent in not mentioning that Alasdair Crawford, the individual who is currently hosting my files (yup folks, only one “mirror”), offered as well, but I turned him down because he gets charged for excess transfers.

September 20, 2002

  • Grendel of TOSEC had suggested, as had a number of other people on comp.sys.tandy, that I check into DejaVu instead of Adobe Acrobat PDF format for the 80 Micros. Since I retained my TIF files, I figured I would give it a shot. The 358 Pages scanned in at 225MB in TIFs. Those TIFs, when imported into Adobe Acrobat produced a file which is 165MB long. The same exact TIFs, when imported into DejaVu, produced a file 17MB in size. Yikes.
  • I have posted the 80 Micro in DejaVu format. Please download it quickly – i am not going to be able to leave it up long. It is Zipped at 16MB. It can be found here

September 25, 2002

  • John Mineur has donated High Resolution Graphics Demonstration Disk (DMK) – Author Unknown (19xx) and High Resolution Graphics Setxy and Print (DMK) – Author Unknown (19xx)

September 27, 2002

  • The 80 Micro page is open for business. It is under Documents on the left navbar.

October 1, 2002

  • The next 80 Micro, 9/83, is almost fully scanned. I am up to 298 as of this moment, out of 356. At this time, the TIFF’s are almost 50MB smaller than they were on the prior 80 Micro as of this point.

October 2, 2002

  • The 9/83 80 Micro is fully scanned. The RAR’s have been posted – The DejaVu is compressing overnight, and should be up in the PM of 10/3.

October 23, 2002

  • A few more 80 Micro covers have been uploaded to the 80-Micro page. I am about 1/2 way thru scanning the current one, but have decided that I cannot scan water damaged 80-Micro’s anymore – the cleanup is only partially effective, and it takes twice the time..

October 24, 2002

  • Neil Morrison has provided a listing of Cassette Recorder Levels. They can be found on the Patches – internals page.

October 26, 2002

  • I have submitted new CLRMame and RomCenter DATs to TOSEC for the Model 1, 3, and 4.
  • Lamar Owen is sending some new disks – including his personal hacked copy of TRSDOS v1.3, which he calls v1.4.

October 29, 2002

  • The scanning of the next 80 Micro has concluded. Tomorrow I will assemble the PDF, RAR it, and create the DejaVu. With any luck, I can post it tomorrow as well.

October 30, 2002

  • 80 Microcomputing (7-81) stats are: 310 Pages, PDF = 120MB, TIFFs = 137MB, DejaVu = 14MB, with the PDF broken into 25 RARs at 5MB each.
  • The issue is now up (and does have the famous Interlude full page color ad). Actually, it’s half up. My German mirror loads to a staging area and he needs to move it, so they are uploaded but unavailable for download. The UK mirror accepted my connection and the files are being uploaded now. For those who MUST have it now, you may have to click on each link a couple of times to get it to choose a mirror which has the file ready to go – hopefully by tomorrow all mirrors will have the files.

October 31, 2002

  • Another 30 80-Micro covers have been scanned. Surprisingly, I am only shy 38 covers at the moment. I guess its time to pick my next 80 Micro scanning victim.

November 1, 2002

All of the covers which I possess are now up. This means that I am missing the following 80 Micros (water damaged or otherwise):

  • February, 1985 (Vol. 61)
  • March, 1985 (Vol. 62)
  • April, 1985 (Vol. 63)
  • May, 1987 (Vol. 88)

November 6, 2002

  • The 80 Micro pages now have links to the existing Load-80’s I have.
  • The 80 Micro covers have been changed from 100 Pixels to 150 Pixels, so they are slightly more legible.
  • The next 80 Micro to be scanned will be September 1981 – it too is water damaged – but I do not really have the inventory to go with a good copy. I am 50 pages into the 360 page issue.
  • You are checking the for/sale page, right? Its been getting a bit of a work out lately.

November 15, 2002

  • The next 80 Micro has been scanned – this time 9/81. The RARs have been uploaded to my mirrors but, as is always the case, the German mirror must move the files before they are web accessible. If you click on a RAR link and get a file not found, try again. When the random number generator hits the UK mirror, you can get the file. Once the German mirror moves the stuff, this will not be necessary.
  • The stats are: 356 Pages – TIFFs = 173MB; PDF = 152MB; 32 RARs @ 5MB each (total 149MB). The DejaVu is giving me a lot of trouble (crashing) so there may not be a DejaVu. I suspect at least ONE of the 356 TIFFs is trouble for it (but not Acrobat) and that’s what’s doing the crashing.
  • Update: DejaVu is being VERY picky on these TIFFs. I have had to redo 95, 125, 131, 132, 133, 142, 143, 146, 147, 149, 150, 151, 154, 157, 189, 190, 191, 199, 200, 202, 203, 204, 206, 209, 212, 218, 219, 220, 225, 226, 229, 232, 236, 241 and 242 so far. 244, 246 and 247 are also “bad” (which is where I stopped checking). I am not going to pursue this any more. Sorry – there will be no DejaVu of this issue.

November 19, 2002

  • I am continuing to see if I can do a DejaVu. So far I have rescanned, 244, 246, 247, 249, 250, 251, 256, 261, 262, 264, 265, 268, 270, 271, 272, 279, 280, 282, 283, 285, 288, 291, 292, 296, 300, 303, 305, 306, 307, 308, 309, 310, 313, 315, 316, 317, 318, 320, 326, 329, 331, 332, 333, 334, 335, 336, 338, 340, 344, 345, 346, 350, 351, and 354. This is ridiculous.
  • Update: OK, so I did all those, and went to import, and got more errors. I will make a second pass to see what’s what.
  • Update: It seems 257 was also bad. The DejaVu is now building.
  • I will probably rebuild the PDF. These new scans are smaller than the old ones, which means the PDF may lose around 3MB in size if I redo it. It seems from Adobe’s web site, that they are darn well aware that TIFF’s have to be inserted individually (but you can buy an add on). Yuck.
  • New Stats: 356 Pages – TIFFs = 166MB; PDF = 146MB; 31 RARs @ 5MB each (total 144MB); DejaVu = 16MB

November 20, 2002

  • I have redone the navigation bar on the left due to many requests of people running 800 x 600 or worse. All computers which I barely support on the site (Model 2-16, Notebook, Pocket, Coco) have been moved under a submenu.
  • Shawn Sijnstra and Walter Smith have each donated a bit of software. Shawn provided 4MB of DMK images, and Walter has mailed over about 15 disks. I will sort them ASAP.

November 25, 2002

  • The Shawn Sijnstra and Walter Smith files have been mostly sorted and posted (there are 6 still unsorted). The Model I page has been updated to reflect the new DOS’s which had been contributed.

  • I have scanned an 80 US Magazine. As always, the German mirror must move it, so if you get errors, go back and retry. The link is under Magazines.

  • Tim Mann has released v3.0 of his Catweasel utilities.

December 10, 2002

  • I have updated the Patches sections. I have also updated the patches files with all of the unsorted patches, so some are new and some have new patches in them. This section is a bit hard to manage, but I had some spare time and wanted to clear out some more of my ‘unsorted’ stuff.
  • I have updated the Search pages.

  • I have started scanning another 80 Micro.
  • Happy New Year to everyone out there in TRS-80 land. I think it has been a really good year for the site, and the kind emails I get from the users are always appreciated. All the best!

January 6, 2003

Thanks to Mike Stewart and Jim Battle, 4 of the missing 80 Microcomputing issues have been added. I believe I am now missing only 2! The covers page has, of course, been updated with the new covers.

January 10, 2003

  • The October 1981 80 Microcomputing has been scanned, PDFd and DejaVu’d. Remember, if you get a file not found error, go back and try again.
  • I have been advised that people cannot download from my file host. I have sent an email and will see what’s what. Hopefully we have not lost the mirror.

January 11, 2003

It seems some kind gentleman has hacked my mirror and deleted all the files. It will take me some time to get them back uploaded, particularly since my work firewall is so strong. Hopefully all the files will be back up in a few days. The 80 Micros and other magazines are truly mirrored, so if you keep trying on each link, you will wind up on the German mirror.

January 21, 2003

  • A walkthru has been completed for Adventure # 14 – Return to Pirate’s Island. It can be found on the Scott Adams Adventure page.
  • Daniel Paquette of Beloeil, Qu?bec has provided the scans of the two remaining missing 80 Micro covers – Issues 88 and 100. Thanks Daniel.

  • February 25, 2003

    • The current file host is having issues which may result in the loss of hosting the files for this site. At this point, virtually all the files are unavailable for download.
    • If anyone can host about 1.5GB of files (or less), please let me know.

    February 26, 2003

  • The files are online but I do need another host … if anyone can host between 200MB and 1.5GB of files (that’s with or without Magazine Scans), please let me know.

Kevin Savetz has posted six of the Tandy Computer Whiz Kids comic books on his Classic Computer Magazine Archive ( http://www.atarimagazines.com/whizkids/).
Published sporadically from 1984 until 1991 and distributed for free at Radio Shack stores, the Tandy Computer Whiz Kids was a series of comic books that featured kids engaged in exciting adventures, information about the world of computers, and frequent mentions of Radio Shack products.
The site currently has the six complete Whiz Kids issues, and is are looking for collectors who have other issues.
Launched in 1996, the Classic Computer Magazine Archive offers full text from Antic, STart, Creative Computing, Creative Computing Video & Arcade Games, and Hi-Res magazines, as well as information from Compute! and Compute!’s Gazette.

Guys and Gals, I am getting mighty tired of scanning 80 Micro’s.

Today I finished scanning the December 1983 issue. It is 324 pages, although 418 scans were needed due to color pages.

    The size breakdown is:

    • 001-049 -> 261MB
    • 050-099 -> 285MB
    • 100-149 -> 258MB
    • 150-199 -> 259MB
    • 200-249 -> 184MB
    • 250-299 -> 251MB
    • 300-324 -> 158MB

for a total of 1.65GB. It took 2 days to scan.

    May 21, 2003

I managed to clean up the first 60 pages today.

Pages 1-49 have been edited down from 261MB to 26.1MB (still in TIFF format)

My procedure is to take all black and white pages, set the magic wand to 22, and click on a black area. I then expand to similar 3 times, and fill the mask with black. I then set the magic wand to 11, click on a white area, and expand to similar once. I then delete the masked areas. I then convert it to 8 bit color and save it as a TIFF. I then open the file. If it is all black, I load the edited file and try 10 colors, then 12, etc., until it is not corrupt. I then move on.

For color, it can be easier or harder. If it is a picture, I trim off the borders. If it is a colored page, I set the magic wand at 4 (very low) and click on the white. I erase the masked items. I then try to see what is the lowest number of colors I can pick which will not drastically distort the image. In cases of a 1 color page (i.e., black, white, and blue), I will try to fill all the blue with one color, and try 16 colors. Otherwise, It is usually 24-32 colors. A full page picture can be 128-192. Obviously, the latter produces large TIFFs.

… but all this is very time consuming, boring, and tiring.

    May 22, 2003

I managed to clean up 61-105 today. Pages 50-99 have been edited down from 285MB to 25.4MB (still in TIFF format)

    May 23, 2003

I managed to clean up 106-189 today. Pages 100-149 have been edited down from 258MB to 19.8MB (still in TIFF format)

    May 24, 2003

I managed to clean up 190-315 today.

    • Pages 150-199 have been edited down from 259MB to 21.0MB (still in TIFF format)
    • Pages 200-249 have been edited down from 184MB to 20.7MB (still in TIFF format)
    • Pages 250-299 have been edited down from 251MB to 24.7MB (still in TIFF format)

    May 25, 2003

I managed to clean up the rest today, and noted that I did not scan page 260 — since the scanner is at the office, this project will have to be put on hold until Tuesday 🙁

Pages 300-324 have been edited down from 158MB to 14.3MB (still in TIFF format)

The total is a drop from 1.65GB to 152MB.

    • Pages 1-99 converted to PDF are 44.1MB.
    • Pages 1-149 converted to PDF are 61.6MB.
    • Pages 1-199 converted to PDF are 80.3MB.
    • Pages 1-249 converted to PDF are 98.2MB.
    • Pages 1-299 (without 260) converted to PDF are 119.9MB.
    • Pages 1-324 (without 260) converted to PDF are 132.3MB.

    May 27, 2003

    • The issue has been RAR’d, ZIP’d, JPEG’d, DeJaVu’d, and uploaded.
    • While the TIFFs were 152MB, the 100% Quality JPEG’s were 450MB. Regardless, the DejaVu converted from the 450MB JPEGs is 18.8MB – go figure

    May 28, 2003

    • Mike Stewart, a long time and loyal visitor to the site, has scanned an 80 Micro! You will notice it is a little different than mine (page size) but the quality is great. Thank you Mike! The PDF is posted (and, as usual, we may need to wait for the german mirror). There will be no DeJaVu of this scan, though.
    • “Dodge”(?) has, apparently, posted what appears to be the Model I and Model III files, RAR’d and renamed per the TOSEC standard, on alt.binaries.emulators.misc. If you are looking for all the files in a big archive, head over to ABEM and grab them.

Tim Mann has added support to his catweasel program v3.1 to let it read disks without using the index hole. This will be helpful to folks trying to read the backs of disks that were made in a flippy drive.

You still have to either get a drive that is willing to return data to the controller even if it sees no index pulses, or punch an extra hole in the jacket just so that the drive sees some index pulses, even though cw2dmk can do without them.

Tim found out that one of the drives he had lying around can be jumpered so that it will let you get read data even if there are no index holes seen. It’s a Mitsubishi MF504C. On this (and other similar Mitsubishi drives, including MF504B and probably others), the trick is to remove the jumper marked RD.

Tim could not find a jumper for this on his Teac FD-55GFR drives.

    • Just to answer a question in advance, yes, 10/85, which is the sole remaining 1985 issue still not scanned, was not scanned. That issue is one of the issues I do not have.

I have started scanning another 80 Micro. Despite my feelings, I grabbed what may wind up being the largest 80 Micro printed. It is December 1982, and is a whopping 484 pages. Needless to say, don’t hold your breath on the download — but its in the works.

Kevin Cardinal has scanned the next issue in the TRS-80 Microcomputer Newsletters — January 1985. The issue is posted, with my thanks.

    • I have made the changes to the site … I took the 12/80 scan, and cut out every software advertisement. I have posted the ads as links next to the filenames on the download pages.
    • On the same note, if anyone knows HTML very well, if you can tell me how to open a pop up window to house a JPG (not a HTM page) which ideally would be sized to match the JPG, please let me know. Right now the ads pop up as a full size window.

I continue to think about manuals. Today I received a few boxes of my stuff from back home in New York. Inside one of the boxes was all of my original manuals (e.g., Microchess, Datestones of Ryn, Basic/S, etc.) I am also trying to make uniform filename formats for these things that TOSEC will honor. I am still not sure if the hosts can handle manuals, though, nor can I provide any attribution to the source of the manuals, which may mean they will come down as soon as they go up if I receive a complaint from the person who scanned it. I guess I will worry about that once these get scanned in.

If anyone has 80 Micro issue # 31 (August, 1982) and a scanner, and is willing to email to me a scan of page 198 for me in 200 DPI grayscale (8.5 x 11 dimension), I should be able to post issue 31. If Monday rolls around and no one has done this, don’t worry – I will rescan the page. The problem is that I am not at work, and have the other 403 pages scanned and cleaned, but cannot create the PDF or DJVU in advance during this holiday weekend without this missing page.

If you can scan it, please use as little compression as possible, and email it to me. Thanks!

Well, I believe the last 80 Micro that will get posted has been posted. The sheet feeder scanner I have used to scan the first pass on the 80 Micro’s (all pages are scanned once on B & W settings, and then each is scanned individually with color settings for pages with any graphics on them) is virtually dead. The sheet feeder’s gears now grind loudly, and many of the resulting scans cannot be used.

It was definitely a good run. I got 1/3 of the 80 Micro’s scanned over the past year and a half.

Despite the dying scanner, a very small new 80 Micro has been scanned – Volume 87 (04/87). It is available on the 80 Micro page.
