Help categorize the TRS-80 software archive

Nearly 30,000 programs, and almost none of them say what kind of program they are. Mark whatever you recognize. Pick as many words as fit — a game that teaches arithmetic is Game, Math, Education — then send the page. Everything is reviewed by hand before it goes anywhere near the archive, so a best guess is worth more than a blank.

Important Note: Do not do multiple entries of the same program. If you flag Super Nova by Big Five once, all Super Nova by Big Five entries will get updated. No need to waste your time flagging each Super Nova

ASTROLOG - FOR ASTRONOMERS AND ASTROLOGERS This program has been designed to carry out many of the rather complex and mundane calculations necessary to calculate the positional data for the Sun, Moon, 59 navigational stars, inner Planets, Jupiter and Aries. The program starts by asking the user to input the latitude and longitude of the observation point. He must also input the height above sea level. The time zone correction will accept decimal hours as there are one or two places with hour fragment differences. Provision is made for readouts to be made automatically in GMT. The program is an interactive one and it has been made very simply to use, for instance, times are entered in hours, minutes and seconds, rather than as decimals. After the initiation date (the program is valid for the period Jan.1 1900 to Dec.31 1999 for any place on Earth) has been entered into the computer and the celestial body chosen, two options are given. The first is to obtain data at a specified moment in time. This includes GHA, LHA, SHA, RA, declination, altitude, the azimuth and where appropriate, semi-diameter parallax and distances, together, in the case of the Moon, with its age. The second option provides rise and set for the day in question, time of the lower meridianal passage and altitude at upper meridianal passage. The plus or minus accuracy as minutes of arc are as follows: Sun 1, Moon 5, Stars and Aries one half, planets 10. Distance accuracy is to two decimal places, stated is the worst case, usually it will be better. It should be stressed that this is a full and serious program written by an experienced astronomer for practical purposes, not as a superficial insight into the subject. Astronomical CalendarMISSING

A J Woodruff / Molimerx Ltd

ASTRONOMICAL CALENDAR - SUN AND MOON CALENDAR This program is written by Mr. A. J. Woodruff who wrote both Astrolog and Horolog shown elsewhere in this catalogue. As an expert on this subject he has now written a program to make it very easy for astronomers and other interested persons to ascertain various items of data which normally require either the consultation of a number of tables or the use of quite complicated calculations. The data output by this program is as follows: . Position of the sun . Position of the moon . The time of sunrise . The time of sunset . The time of moonrise . The time of moonset . The age of the moon This data is available almost instantaneously for no less than 170 different towns in the United Kingdom, or if the user is not situated in any of the towns contained in data statements of the program then he may enter his position by way of latitude and longitude coordinates. As indicated, Mr. Woodruff is highly knowledgeable on this subject and has incorporated into the program all of the requirements of an astronomer, most of which we must confess are way over our heads. A correction for a refraction is incorporated. A correction is also included in moon observations for the parallax effect of the observer being on the surface of the earth. Overall basic accuracy is within one minute of arc for the sun and plus or minus two minutes for the moon. The sunrise and sunset accuracies are within one minute of time. Local times of moonrise and moonset correct for refraction, parallax or dip are accurate to plus or minus two minutes of time. The age of the moon is given in days and hours and is accurate to three hours. The program is straightforward and convenient to use and two options are available for entering a new date with the same locality or for entering a new locality. If neither of these are chosen then the calculations will continue to be based on the locality and date originally entered. For those who need this sort of information we would imagine this program is close to being essential. The calendar, incidentally, is valid from January 1st 1900 to December 1st 1999. The program is supplied on cassette but is compatible with disk Basic.

Look to the Stars The Greeks and Romans used to look to the stars for guidance and revelations. Ancient mariners depended on the stars for navigation. Now you, too, can look to the stars for fun and recreation with help from the Astronomy Pac. This program enables you to identify and locate any star or constellation in the night sky. The Astronomy Pac generates its own almanac data and contains detailed information on 58 of the most prominent stars. This lets you print the location of these stars for any time until the year 2000 from any location on earth. Astronomy Pac's star identification program determines the star and constellation you should observe after you enter the time, date, your approximate position, and the star's height and azimuth. This astronomy program comes complete with software, instructions, astrolab, compass, and H.A. Rey's book, The Stars. It is ideal for both beginner and advanced astronomer. The Astronomy Pac costs $59.95 for Model I, III, or 4 cassette, and is sold by Celestial Software, 3010 Warrington Ave., Lakeland, FL 33803, 813-686-3311.

An Asylum is a real-time simulation that takes place in a building with 1500 locations. Both are inhabited by crazed inmates, sadistic guards, and evil doctors. Your goal? ESCAPE! Our 3-D graphics are recognized throughout the industry for their machine-language speed and clarity. Hallways recede into the screen as though you are actually there. Doors open and close. Beds, desks, and other inmates are drawn on the screen. Instantaneously! Asylums understand complete sentences, not just choppy one and two word commands. Sentences like 'Drop everything on the desk except the matches' are interpreted and acted on instantly. Further, the command 'VOCABULARY' will show you the entire dictionary, eliminating the need to second-guess program designers you have never met. But don't take our word for it. See the reviews in '80 Microcomputing (Feb. 1981, Aug. 1981, May 1982). And remember, Med Systems offers to refund your money if you aren't satisfied. Just return the game within 14 days of receipt. Although Asylum II is the sequel to Asylum I, you need not have played one to play the other. Asylum I and Asylum II require at least 16K of RAM, and are available on tape or disk (please specify). sensational software AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER This real-time machine language program puts you in the chair of a busy air-traffic controller. 27 prop planes and jets are depending on you as they take off, land and fly over your air space. You give orders to turn, maintain a holding pattern, change altitude, approach and land at either of two airports. Written by an air traffic controller, this realistic fast-paced simulation includes navigational beacons and the requirement that planes take off and land into the wind. The program's continuously variable skill level assures that you won't soon tire of this instructive and absorbing simulation. In Air Traffic Controller you assume responsibility for the safe flow of air traffic within a 15 x 25 mile area up to 5,000 feet in altitude. During your shift as a controller in charge of this airspace 26 aircraft become active and under your control. Jets and prop planes have to be guided to and from the two airports, navigational beacons and ten entry/exit fixes. The aircraft enter the controller's airspace at various altitudes and headings whether or not you are ready. Air Traffic Controller retains the basic realism of air traffic control. This program requires the same steady nerves under pressure and the same instant, almost instinctive, analyses of complex emergencies which are demanded of a professional air traffic controller. But 'ATC' adds the excitement and well-defined goals of a game. This is just a simulation, and all passengers left in air traffic limbo by a panicked player will live to fly another day. Air Traffic Controller is available for the 16K TRS-80, the Apple II, and Apple II plus on cassette for $9.95 TO ORDER TOLL-FREE 1-800-258-1790 (In NH call 673-5144)

Enchanted Island-Plus Greg Hassett, North Chelmsford, MA, has written two machine-language Adventures for the 16K Level II TRS-80. The first, Enchanted Island-Plus, is a language translation of Enchanted Island, a member of the series of BASIC Adventures. The second assembly language Adventure is called Mystery Mansion. This new series features true split-screen scrolling, a blinking graphic cursor, and dual prompting symbols. The computer's responses are instantly displayed. Using a database technique which does not require on-line interpretation by the main code, the series offers considerable memory for additional game logic. These adventures are available from Mad Hatter Software.
