Einführung / Geschichte
Vor der Geburt

Denken Sie an die CB Verrücktheit? Von nichts im Jahr 1970 auf über 20% der Großunternehmen in den frühen
70's, CB-Funkgeräte nicht nur dazu beigetragen, Tandy Gewinne, sondern brachte eine ganze neue Gruppe von Kunden in die Läden Radio Shack.

Am Ende des Tages, bot ihm einen Job Roach auf der Stelle. Leininger akzeptiert, aber festgestellt, dass Tandy nicht
wirklich an einen Computer gebunden noch nicht. Für sechs Monate er, in seinen Worten, "spielte mit ein paar Dinge-an
Audio-Pre-Amp, ein Computer-Kit und einige andere kleinere Projekte. "Aber wie CB sich mehr und mehr sauer, gab es eine wachsende

Die Geburt

Die erste "Tandy 'Computer war das Radio Shack (TRS - Tandy Radio Shack) TRS-80. Genannt nur der TRS-80, es wurde später bekannt als das "Modell I", wenn der TRS-80 Model II in den Sommer 1979 angekündigt wurde.

Das Model war ich Tandy erfunden von Don Französisch (einen Käufer für) & Steve Leininger (Der Kopf des Homebrew Computer Association) und am ersten Mittwoch kündigte am, 3. August 1977, in Radio Shack Pressemitteilung 7741-A, bei einer Pressekonferenz im Warwick Hotel in New York City.

Radio Shack, sagte sie erwarteten Lieferungen an die in zwei Wochen beginnen, war aber ganz sicher der Ware, zu denken, sie könnten 600 bis 1.000 im ersten Jahr verkaufen. Es war auch der teuerste Einzelposten Radio Shack jemals zu diesem Zeitpunkt durchgeführt. Sie erforderte eine Einzahlung von $ 100 auf dem Computer, auf Bestellung. In Wirklichkeit 10.000 Einheiten wurden im ersten Monat verkauft! Radio Shack wurde mit Aufträgen überhäuft, und Lieferzeiten fiel schnell bis Monate nach Bestellung. Von Anfang November 1977 wurde Radio Shack liefern 16K RAM Einheiten mit 5-stellige Seriennummer, die Anfang September bestellt worden war. Damals gab es eigene Seriennummer Sequenzen für 4K und 16K-Maschinen.

Das Model begann ich mit einem $ 599 Level I System mit 4K RAM, überwachen und Kassette, mit allen Kabeln und Adaptern bereit zu gehen (außer, dass es dauerte 3 Steckern, so dass Sie wahrscheinlich notwendig, um eine Steckdosenleiste Kauf). Die Stufe 1 wurde bald durch einen 16K Level-II-System ersetzt. Die Stufe II (erstes Modell) wurde aktualisiert, um eine numerische Tastatur enthalten.

Die Evolution

Bald nach Level II zeigte sich die Expansion Interface zur Verfügung gestellt wurde für 299 $. Die Expansion Interface hatte Raum für eine zusätzliche 2 Bänke 16K RAM und eine RS-232-Karte. Neben der Expansion Interface enthielten bereits ein Disketten-Controller und einem Regelkreis zu ermöglichen zwei Kassetten bis zu einer Zeit angeschlossen und gesteuert werden durch den Computer. Die Expansion Interfeace war ein Wandel von der ursprünglichen Ankündigung, dh es würde eine Expansion Box mit einem 5-Slot-S-100-Chassis für die Einheit erklärt werden. (Kein Preis war bisher für die S-100-Box gegeben, dass ich mich erinnere.) Mike Yetso hat darauf hingewiesen, dass es auch ein 8K RAM für eine zusätzliche $ 99, aber nur wenige von ihnen wurden nie gemacht, und Mike hat t glauben, alle Kunden EVER bekam ein 8K-Upgrade-Kit - mit allen Computern 8K wobei 16K aufgewertet.

Disk-Laufwerke zeigte sich im folgenden Jahr für 500 Dollar. Diese wurden Shugart SA400-Laufwerke mit über 80K Speicher. Der Drucker Centronics Line zeigte sich als gut.

Der Tod

Das Model war ich im Januar 1981 aufgrund von nicht fortgeführten der Unterlassung der FCC Radio Frequency Interference Vorschriften erfüllen. Sie entschieden, was sie wirklich wollte, war ein günstiger Prozessor, nämlich den National Semiconductor SC / MP.

    Das ist, wo Radio Shack mich eingeholt. Ich war in der National Semiconductor Mikroprozessor-System-Design-Gruppe, und ich war, sie als die Person, die auf der Tiny Basic für SC / MP Arbeitsgruppen eingeführt wurde. Das seit überarbeitet und ist jetzt als Nible verteilt.

    Nach der Arbeit mit Radio Shack etwa zwei Monate, davon überzeugt, dass ich ihnen den SC / MP kann nicht der Weg zu gehen. Es sah aus wie wir waren unter der 4K-ROM, um nur Integer Basic, das entspricht ungefähr 1.7K Basic, das Dr. Li Wang Chen aus Palo Alto geschrieben hatte, war zu haben. Also sagte ich: Vielleicht sollten wir in einigen der anderen Prozessoren, die verfügbar sind, schauen. Alles, was nichts mit 16 Bit zu tun hatte, war damals zu teuer. Von den beiden 8-Bit-Prozessoren, die wir hauptsächlich betrachtet wurden die 6800 und 8080.

    Wir stiegen in ein Haar-Ziehen Wettbewerb sowohl mit den 8080 und 6800. Es schien, dass sie für unsere Anwendung geeignet sowohl bei der Programmierung Gegend waren, aber sie hatten weniger wünschenswerten Eigenschaften, wie der MOS-Level-Uhren, und ein paar andere unerwünschte Eigenschaften, und ich beschloß es gut sein könnte, um etwas ein wenig aussehen mehr erarbeiten.     Inzwischen hatten wir recht gut bestimmen, was unsere erste System wurde aussehen würde, und wir hatten es bestimmte Segmente, die wir kannten, waren sowieso nicht ändern breadboarded. Ich habe einige dieser Day-One-Prototypen hier. Dieses Zeug ist aus einer Karte Rack, was da für etwas anderes verwendet wurde, typisch, aber ... Wir hatten mehrere Karten machten. Dies ist die Z-80 CPU-Karte. Es ist auf Standard-Radio Shack Steckbrett getan, sehr High-Budget-Betrieb (lacht). Dies war das Video Charakter-Generator. Es gab eine weitere Karte mit dem Charakter-Generator, der getroffen wurde abgesehen. Die Kassette und Tastatur-Schnittstelle (hält ein 2,99 $ 4 x 4.5 "perfboard, dass 44-poliger Stecker) dauert. Und wir fingen an, einige der bestehenden Tiny Basics in ROM, nur um zu zeigen, dass wir eine funktionierende Einheit zu erhalten hatte.

    Die Z-80 wurde entschieden, und wir waren von der Planung bis zur 2K-ROM verwenden, mit einem winzigen Basic in sie, und von 2102 1K RAM, Speicherplatz für das Programm. Historisch gesehen, wäre dies vielleicht wurden eine Menge Speicher heraus zu geben mit einer Maschine, an der Zeit, unter Berücksichtigung der ursprünglichen MITS Altair, die mit 256 Byte RAM kam, bis sie herausfanden, dass sie gar nicht haben, um Ihnen Speicher in Ordnung zu bringen, die Maschine zu kaufen. Wir planten, um Ihnen einen sehr praktikablen Maschine.

    Wie Sie vielleicht wissen, unterstützt die Z-80 dynamischen RAMs, mit sehr wenig Aufwand der Hardware, die traditionell erforderlich ist. Also haben wir aus dynamischen RAMs preiswerte und fand heraus, dass es eine sehr große Preisunterschiede zwischen ihnen und den statischen Typ. Wir breadboarded die Sache mit der dynamischen RAMs und im Wesentlichen Li-Chen Wang's mit unseren Basic I / O-Treiber hinzu. Wir hatten all diese Platten in einem kleinen Käfig-Karte, verschraubt unter dem hinteren Ende der Tabelle. Wir hatten eines der modifizierten Fernseher und unsere Tastatur oben auf, dass Kunststoff-Fall, und das ist, wenn wir es zeigte Mr. Tandy.

    Er kam herein, und ich glaube nicht, dass er erkannte, wir hatten alles unter dem Tisch (lacht). Was noch interessanter ist, dass Leute, die wirklich über sie kannte, waren alle nudging einander "heh heh, du weißt, es ist alles unter den Tisch." Als wir endlich mit unserem ersten Pre-Production-Einheiten, wo alles im Inneren der Fall war, sie sagte: "Na, mal sehen, was unter den Tisch," und sie hob sich der Vorhang und es ist leer. Wir hatten das Ding wieder da, und er (Mr. Tandy) sah es, und ich glaube, er verstand die, äh, er verstehe nicht, all die technischen Sachen, wie alle hier verstehen würden, dass alles, was dort passiert ist, aber ich denke, er begann sich die finanziellen Auswirkungen der Drucklegung in den Computer Geschäft verstehen, und das ist, wenn wir wirklich eine go-ahead. Ich denke, das war im Februar ('77), und dann habe ich nicht schlafen für vier Monate.

    Wir gingen von diesem Zeitpunkt hier, bestätigt unsere Angaben über die Basic, was wir wirklich wollten, und auch bestätigt, ein wenig von der Hardware, bestimmte Dinge, die wir für das Hardware-Design zu klären, die CPU und die unterstützenden Schaltung hatte.

    Die CPU: natürlich haben wir beschlossen hatten 80 auf dem Z-und die Unterstützung Schaltung wir haben rund um das heißt: das, was im Wesentlichen Puffer umgeben.     Wir hatten einen weiteren Kompromiss auf dem Gebiet der Video-Displays suchen.     Factory location – They're being manufactured in Fort Worth. Part of it is being sub-assembled in Austin Texas; the whole thing though is being assembled in Fort Worth. While Tandy Corp. does have Japanese electronics manufacturing firms under its wing, we feel that the quality control which we wish to exercise over it right now is going to require us to manufacture them in Texas right now.

    Marketing- “A lot of us are confused as to how Radio Shack or anyone is going to take on something like this, which is really much more sophisticated than their other products?” We're looking at different avenues for selling product. Tandy Corp. has recently announced a Tandy Computer Store. Tandy Computers is much like Byte Shop and Computer Land, it's Don French's outfit. That's being opened on an experimental basis on Oct. 1st in Fort Worth, just so we can get a pulse on it. Fort Worth may not be the computer capital of the world, but it's close enough that Mr. Tandy can walk in and shake a few people if something is going wrong. Marketing computers is getting interesting. We feel that we have a jump over some people. For example I understand that Sears will be marketing a computer, and from what I understand it's supposed to be the Commodore unit. That's all hearsay, and I think that's all you'll get from anyone now. Macy's is supposed to be handling the Compucolor. The Compucolor, as you know, is a $2,700 computer. We feel that's far out of the range of anything Radio Shack could sell. Up until now, the most expensive we've had is the STA-2000. That's a $500 stereo receiver which is one of the better receivers available in that price range today. I realize that (our computer) may not be as flexible as an IMSAI or Altair, or whatever, but for $600 we feel you are getting at least your money's worth, and we hope to make it maybe more than your money's worth.

    Market target – We originally thought our market was going to be the home consumer. That's the ideal – we said, wow, if we can get one in every home, at so much, you start seeing all those big numbers, we'd get into buying AT&T by the end of the year. Eventually we're going to be getting back more towards the consumer. This computer has generated so much business-community activity and interest that we will probably have a spin-off corporation that will do nothing but handle business areas of it. And if we keep our prices the way they are, of course the hobbyist can take advantage of the improvements we make in those areas.

    Availability – We are doing everything we can to bring up production. One of the biggest problems we've had is that corporate people who make decisions – you know, we'd come in and say “we've got the greatest thing since sliced bread, a computer everyone's going to want”. They didn't want to commit to it. Radio Shack doesn't climb out on a limb too often. Too many other companies have; look at Sears with its Cartravision color TV/tape recorder. They lost money on that. They're being a lot more careful, I would imagine, with their computers. We're being careful too. What we see right now is that we've been much more careful than we should have. It's a case that if we had 10,000 in the warehouse right now we'd probably have them moved off by the end of the month, with very little effort. We're not pushing this as hard as we will once we get production up. You'll see Paul Burke on television with our computer, or something like that. You're not going to see that this week, or by the end of the year. Next year, it's a very real possibility.

    The TRS-80 System

    Radio Shack's TRS-80 Microcomputer System is fully wired, tested and UL listed for electrical safety – you can put it to work immediately!     Basic TRS-80 systems include a 12″ video monitor, Realistic battery/AC cassette recorder, power supply, 232-page user's manual and a 2-game cassette tape for playing Blackjack and Backgammon.

    The TRS-80 comes to you ready to be programmed, either from pre-recorded cassette tape or from the keyboard. A “program” is simply a set of step-by-step instructions telling your TRS-80 what you want it to do.     Inside the 53-key professional keyboard housing is the actual “brain” of the computer – a powerful Z-80 microprocessor that serves as the central processing unit (CPU). Programs and data are stored in internal “memory chips.” Our lowest-priced TRS-80 computer contains 4096 bytes (4K) of user memory, or RAM (a byte being roughly equivalent tp one typewritten character and made up of eight electrical signals called “bits”). It can be expanded to 16K within the keyboard unit and to 48K by using the Expansion Interface with additional memory options.

    Note – the Z-80 is an 8-bit microprocessor and can address a total of 64K of memory. Both ROM and RAM are addressed in the TRS-80, along with some internal “overhead.” In a 48K RAM configuration, the last memory address is 65,535 -the usual ending address for a 64K computer.

    The “Read-Only Memory” chips contain the “BASIC interpreter” software. The interpreter accepts plain-English commands and statements from the programmer and translates them into the numeric language ofthe Z-80. You can access the 2-80′s numeric “machine language” directly by using our “T-Bug” monitor program, available on cassette tape, or in “assembly language” by using our “EditorLAssembler” tape. (Both of these tapes are suggested only for advanced programmers with a knowledge of machine and assembly language.)

    The Realistic cassette recorder lets you record and play your own programs or use one of Radio Shack's prepared programs – simply run the cassette and begin computing. The recorder is included free of extra charge with each basic TRS-80 system. Other recorders may be used – with varying degrees of success – but only if they have automatic recording level capability

    The video monitor looks like a standard television set without the channel selector. It features a wider bandwidth than most TV sets for a shatper display of printing and graphics. The monitor operates on ordinary 120-volt AC. 60 Hz house current. Foreign versions are available in other countries and are sold only overseas by Tandy Electronics outlets. The computer cannot be connected directly to a standard TV set.

    For access to other hardware, the TRS-80 utilizes a unique 40-pin bus (connector system) that can attach the TRS-80 to our Expansion Interface, or other external devices. Housed in the finest ABS material, the TRS-80 is virtually unbreakable. It may be left “on” for extended periods of time with no adverse effects, as long as the cooling vents are not obstructed.

    4K, Level I “Starter” System (26‑1051): Our lowest-priced Model I TRS-80 computer contains 4K bytes (4096 characters) of RAM (Random Access Memory). RAM is internal memory space accessible to the user for program and data storage. This system is programmed in “Level I BASIC”, an easy-to-learn computer language that's ideal for beginners.     BASIC

    Level I
    Radio Shack's Level-I BASIC really packs a lot into 4K of ROM to produce a thorough but easy to understand computer language. It's the ideal entry level programming language for the computer novice. In fact, BASIC is an acronym for “Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code.” Level-I includes most standard BASIC commands, video graphics, cassette input/output, floating point arithmetic, numeric array, and limited string variables. If .you can read and write English, you can probably learn to program with Level-I BASIC!

    The Radio Shack TRS-80 Level I language is the way to learn computer programming. It's a simplied version of the BASIC (Beginner's All-Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) programming language, and allows you to “talk” to the computer using simple English commands and statements. Even if you have no prior knowledge of computer operation or the writing of programs, our easy-to-understand teaching manual lets you quickly learn how to program the TRS-80. Level I includes most standard BASIC commands and also several outstanding features, such as a screen display of 16 lines of 64 characters. 48×128 video graphics, 250-baud cassette input/output rate, floating point arithmetic, 6-digit numeric accuracy, single dimension array, limited string variables, command abbreviations, and error codes.     Level II
    If you're experienced with Level I, be prepared for some pleasnat surpises with Level II. Level II is a far more advanced or “extended” version of of BASIC, and offers vastly increased computing power (its execution time is 30% faster than Level I's) and additional features. You can choose a screen format of 16 lines of either 32 or 64 characters – both with automatic scrolling, and the 500-baud cassette input/output rate is twice as fast as Level I. In addition, Level II offers multi-dimension arrays, comprehensive string variable handling, automatic line numbering, tracing, PEEK and POKE, call-up of machine language routines, printer commands, and 23 specific error messages.

    Versatile program editing with extensive editing commands allows easy modification of your programs. Level II offers increased numeric accuracy of up to 16 significant digits; intrinsic functions remain at 6-digit accuracy. Program lines, logical lines, and string variables may be up to 255 characters long (overflow moves to the next screenline). A compressed storage format allows some programs to be stored in fewer bytes of memory than in Level I. Level II is stored in 12K of Read-Only Memory, and comes with a comprehensive reference manual.

    Disk Basic
    The TRSDOS operating system includes the software and input/output functions needed to operate the TRS-80 Disk System. TRSDOS allows vast file storage space, expanded file manipulations, and much quicker access time than you get with tape storage. Disk BASIC allows you to access files either randomly or sequentially, and programs may be stored in BASIC as ASCII or in compressed format files to save storage space.

    Radio Shack's Disk BASIC is a further extension of the Level II language. A few of Disk BASIC's extension commands are DEF FN – allows userdefined functions. HEX CONSTANTS – allows you to enter hexadecimal and octal constants by preceding them with “&H” or “&”, and TIME$ – returns date and time as a text string.

    File commands include CLOSE – closes a file which is currently open, LOAD-loads a BASIC program from disk into memory. MERGE – combines a BASIC program with another program currently in memory. OPEN – opens a file for use. This command specifies sequential/random input or output, the file number, and file name. SAVE-saves a BASIC program onto disk. (You can CLOAD a tape program, then easily put it on disk.)

    Expansion is a key word in the TRS-80 philosophy. The TRS-80′s modular design lets you expand to just the system you want. Of course, you can add 16K RAM and Level II BASIC to the keyboard unit. Beyond that point, the Expansion Interface becomes the hub of expanded TRS-80 computer systems.

    The Expansion Interface measures 4 1/2 x 16 1/2 x 8″ and is designed to sit directly under the video monitor acting as a base for it. The TRS-80′s power supply module, and an identical one for the interface, are housed inside the interface enclosure. Space is also provided for our optional RS-232-C Serial Interface Board.

    A cable approximately 6″ long connects the interface to the TRS-80 bus connector. The interface provides output connectors for our TRS-80 printers, disk drives, dual cassette recorders, and an RS-232-C serial port, as well as an extension of the TRS-80 bus, the controller for the electronic circuit needed to install up to four TRS-80 Mini Disk drives, a printer and dual cassette recorders are an integral part of the Expansion Interface, as are the provisions for an extra 16K or 32K of optional RAM.     A 13,000-byte program which takes 3 1/2 minutes to load from cassette tape (Level II) will load in less than 20 seconds from disk. And you may read information one file after the other (sequential), or go directly to any sector without reading the preceding files (random).

It's ideal for people who use electronic information services during business hours when long distance rates are at their highest. All you do is plug the power cord into a wall socket, the line cord into the phone jack and the connecting cable to our RS232C-equipped computer. It's always in “Auto Answer,” so that if a host computer calls you (and your computer is properly configured), you can begin receiving information automatically. The modem automatically adjusts to the incoming baud rate. To originate, you just set the baud rate to match the host or service, run your communication software package, and place the call. And you can upgrade your DC-1200 for automatic origination.

    TRS-80 Telephone Interface I 26‑1170 N / A Radio Shack's Telephone Interface I lets the TRS-80 “talk” with other computer equipment over the phone! After the proper number has been reached. you simply place your telephone handset in the Interface's cradle – without a single electrical connection to your telephone lines.

    This Radio Shack coupler converts a serial stream of data from the TRS-80 RS-232-C interface into selective audio tones which are then transmitted over standard telephone lines. It can also reverse the process, decoding selective audio tones and feeding them into the TRS-80 throughthe RS-232-C interface. (The RS-232-C allows the TRS-80 to communicate with the outside world via a 2-wire connection, but with electrical signals. Since electrical signals cannot be sent over a voice telephone line, the Telephone Interface converts those signals to audio tones so that the connection can be made over long distances via telephone.) The TRS-80 Telephone Interface I operates in the “originate only” mode, meaning that it can send information to other hardware. It is capable of “two-way communication” only with another computer system having 'originate and answer” capabilities.

It's a full “originate/answer” acoustic coupler which allows two TRS-80′s to talk to each other.
